This idea was motivated by Aravind and something which should be

accomplished.

- It is important to get all the works on ambaaL in e-format and

make it accessible to people all over the world. Internet

provides us this excellent opportunity.

- As a first step we can make sure all the works by shrii shankara (or

attributed to him) are available in this electronic format. I have

access to most of the shloka-s, which are printed in the 1st volume of

Collected works of shrii shankara. I can send the relevant pages to

those who wish to type in.

-We can use ITRANS format which is used for our kaamaakshi web

site as well.

-May be finally we should get the documents in PDF format so that

it can be read across platforms.

-I have attached the list of works (which I got from Aravind, who

inturn got it from the Dr. S. Marur's posting). I did not cross

check and make sure all the works (at least with the book I

have) are present.

-Next step is to find out what is already available. Many are

already available on

http://sanskrit.gde.to/doc_devii/doc_devii.html

This will help us not to repeat the work.

-It is a huge task and it can be done as only a group

effort. Even 5-10 minutes a day will add up to a lot over a

year. We need volunteers to coordinate and handle this effort.

ACTION ITEMS:

1) Find an volunteer to coordinate the efforts.

2) Find volunteers to contribute to this task

3) Send relevant pages to the volunteers (if they do not have

access to the text).

4) They then type in and post to the list.

5) Then it is compiled and added to kaamakshi page. May be swami

vishvarupanandaji will require help here.

Please add your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks.

Ravi

Namaste,

It's a good idea to extend it to other saints too. For now let our focus be

on Shankara.

I am not comfortable with the view that the works are attributed to him.

They are by him indeed. If we take a close look at his works as a whole its

easy to understand that there is nothing to contradict with his philosophy.

It was in a very later stage that bhakti and GYAna were viewed as two

different doctrines. In Shankara's time they were complementary.

A closer look at prastAna trayI reveals that shankara's claim is just that,

work alone (karma) can not lead to liberation, with out full renunciation at

any stage. Its only a recent approach that has caught our religion that

bhakti and GYAna are two different paths. This doesn't seem to be

shankara's opinion nor we are known of some theory that existed at his time

that would advocate this claim.

According to Shankara devotion or bhakti is logically capable of being

synthesized with knowledge of the attribute less. The intimate blend that

Shankara makes with GYana and bhakti as the means and end is seen vividly in

his gItA bhAShya. Works like prabhoda sudhAkaram even excels his triode by

its clarity in synthesizing jnana and bhakti in its sweep. In fact it can

also be said that shankara hR^idayam can be understood only after studying

all his works as a whole.

GYAna mishra bhakti, suddha bhakti and so many other theories are seen amid

advaitins only in a later time frame. Any way my attempt is not to

complement GYAna and bhakti but to wave away the little ambiguity if any in

the authenticity of his works. There may be few false attributes here and

there, but it does not seem reasonable to wave away all expect prastAna

trayI as not by Shankara.

The best proof that one can ever claim for is the word of AcharyAs of our

time who are there to clear all ambiguity. If Sri Sri Chandra shekarendra

bhAratI mahAswamigal of Sringeri or Sri Chandrashekarendra sarasvati

swamigal of kAN^chi have advocated some work to be of ShankarA's then it is

by Shankara indeed.

Sri Sri Narasimha bhArati swamigal of Sringeri through T.K Balasubramaniya

Iyer has verified and authenticated all works of Shankara and published it

through Vanivilas press Srirangam. The first volume of this book has all the

devotional hymns authored by Shankara.

This set of 10 volumes has been republished by Samanta Books and is

available for the public now. For people who stay in US, this book is

available through

VEDANTA SOCIETY BOOKSHOP

2323 VALLEJO STREET

SAN FRANCISCO CA 94213

Ph - 415-922-2323

http://www.vedanta.com/

(Name of the book is THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHANKARA VOLUME -1, For

interested people all 10 volumes are available. I recently got a copy when I

went to CA.)

For those in India (Madras)

Samanta Books

10 Kamaraj Bhavan

573 Mount Road, Chennai.

For our task, Ravi or myself would be glad to make a copy and send it to

those who volunteer.

As step one, as Ravi suggested, I request list members to search the net and

find out what all is already available. Please post the Itrans version to

the list instead of pointing through a link. Once we are done with that we

will know the volume remaining and ask for volunteers to come forward and

code atleast one shloka per day. Experts like P.P Narayana swami and others

can proof read them.

We are also targeting for a simple translation to follow each shloka.

Members who are comfortable in posting a translation with the text or the

translation alone can please come forwards and do it.

It would definitely be an achievement that our small group can claim if we

could give an e-format to all the works of Shankara addressed to the divine

mother.

I can easily do that.

I'm also ready to type and post some texts, and I will of course compile and

add the texts to the kaamaakshi page as and when they are posted.

I'm sorry for the long gap (from the 5th of this month till today) in

updates. I had some network problems here and could not go online.

I (or Aravind) can send the relevant pages to those who wish to

type it. The more difficult and important task is coordinating

the whole effort. I will be grateful if you can take up that

responsibility.

Already Satish Raja Arigela said he can code tripurasundarii

vedapaada stava. And Sridhar has agreed to encode one of the

texts.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Ravi
