Guest guest
This name also occurs in sahasranaama. In the context of the names bhagapriyaa, bhagaaraadhya, subhaga, and bhagamalinii, some of the meanings of word bhaga was discussed (please refer to that). According to devii-bhaagavata puraaNa, bhagavati is the one who knows the source and dissolution of beings, their comings and goings. Other interpretation is bhaga denotes six lordly attributes and bhagavatii is the one who possesses these attributes. Or bhaj means worship and avati means to protect. Hence, bhagavatii is the one who protects those who worship HER. A name can have more than one meaning and interpretation. But it may revolve around a strong central idea. In this case, it is that SHE is the supreme being. Often when we say ashhTottaram or sahasranaama, it may not be always possible to contemplate on all the possible interpretations of a name, but we can hold on one particular meaning/idea which appeals to us the most. -- Ravi
