The meaning of tripura is explained as follows:

 

1)Three bodied:

 

According to kaalikaa puraaNa, parama shiva's body has become triple:

the upper part became Brahma, the middle Vishnu,and the bottom portion as

Rudra.Since these 3 puraas(bodies) are in him, he is called tripura and so his

spouse as tripuraa.

 

2)Resident in triads:

One of HER mantra contains three syllables;Another mantra of devi contains

three peaks ( kuuTaas);the naaDiis where SHE resides are

three-suShumnaa,pi~ngala and iDaa:HER shaktiis are three-icchaa , kriyaa and

GYnaana;SHE,who is beyond jaagrat(waking),svapna(dream),and suShupti(deep

sleep)states;"The whole universe of which she is the muulaprak^Riti(the first

principle)and which she pervades is a modification of three modes of energy,viz.

sattva(rythm),rajas(mobility) and tamas(inertia)."

 

3)Anterior to the trinity:

 

brahma,vishnu rudra:An honoured sage (abhiyukta) has said :"Because the Devi

created the three forms(trimuurti), because SHE is in the form of

three(trayiimayi),beause even after dissolution of the three worlds SHE

recreates them again, the Mother's(ambikaa)name is appropriately

tripuraa."(trimuurtir sargaacca purobhavatvaat.h trayiimayatvaacca

purai-vadevyaaH;laye trilokye api puraaNaacca prayombikaayaas-tripureti naama")
