Rough english translation:

 

 

SHE is OmkAri

The primal praNava

The beautiful lady

In green-hued body

In the role of AnkAri

Assuming the mighty "I"

SHE created the five

And manifested all

Yet, SHE remains undisturbed

In HER pristine glory

In the sweet hrImkAra

As the eternal substratum

Tamil A~NkAri is a modified form ahamkAri, that is probably one of the

readings of that term. Similarly O~NkAri is AUMkAri. The aivar or five

mentioned here are the five pancha bhUta-s. inittu irundhALe became

initurindhALe for the form of poetry.

Tirumantiram is a great delight to read and especially in Tamil. The

translation I have given is mine, however, I have the book by RK math

to make sure that I understand it correctly. They also give a brief

poetic translation and probably a very accurate one.

For nasals I have not followed any standard scheme, especially i do not

distinguish ta na and Ra ^na, and I use na for both. I should admit, I am

quite sloppy when it comes to transliteration.

Is there any scope for interpreting the number five as

brahma, vishni,rudra, mahesvara and sadasiva , since Devi is described as

aumkaara in this verse and since

 

aumkaaraa = a + u + ma +nada+viraamam =brahma + vishnu....sadashiva

 

i am not sure about the defnition of aumkaaram which i remembered and wrote

above.

please correct me here.

Yes. It is a valid interpretation. If I am not mistaken, verse 5 of

bahvR^ichopanishad is in support of this. The first five is what you

have mentioned. Only the next five is the pancha bhuuta-s. Hence, it

is a better interpretation. Thanks for pointing this out.

 

I also received a personal communication mentioning that it is five

senses and not pancha bhUta-s. I think both are correct. And the

tanmAtra-s of the pancha bhuuta-s correspond to the five senses.

 

pR^ithvi - gandha tanmAtra

vAyu - sparsha

appu - rasa

AkAsha - shabda

agni - ruupa

 

This is well explained in the commentary of verse 9 of saundaryalaharI

(in Tamil by thEthiyUr subrahmanya shAstrigaL). Pancha bhUta-s and

five senses only differ in cosmic/human interpretation.

It is verse 6. My understanding of this verse is based on aNNaa's

(subrahmaNya aiyar) translation in present in the text devii

upanishads (sanskrit-tamil).

 

pa~ncharUpaparityAgA darvarUpaprahANataH |

adhishhThAnaM paraM tattvamekaM sachchhishhyate mahat.h || iti || 6||
