O ocean of compassion, the one who has the love of shrii

sundareshvara, I am a small child with a wavering mind and I am

fit for your compassion. Please direct the glances of thine which

is filled with mercy (dayaa) and which falls like succession of

waves on me. O mother, besides thee I have no other refuge.

-madhurai is called haalasya xetram or aalavaay koTTam. There is

incident in thiruviLaiyaaDal puraaNam which explains the

background of this. Lord sundareshvara (shiva) is the Lord of the

haalasyapuri and shrii miinaaxii.

-In the eyes of Mother, the most needy is first fit for

compassion. Mother often runs to the child who cannot help itself

first before attending to others. By emphasizing the kaarpaNyam,

aacharya says I am fit for thy compassion.

-Another aspect that makes a devotee fit for HER compassion is

utter dependence. Realization that I have no other refuge, and

you are my only hope, is the key. As long as we think we have

other options, God has no option but wait for us to realize our

utter helplessness.

In this verse the aacharya is praying for us and not for

himself. Being a jiivana mukta, shrii chandrasekhara bhaarati

svaamigaL is non-different from ambaaL. Hence, it is ambaaL

HERSELF teaching us how to seek refuge in HER.

Corrections and additions are welcome.
