Namaste,

I am more or less a silent member of this group. Sri.Ravi asked me to send a

bhajan or song in kannada to the list. Only after this try, I realize how

blessed you all are for whom thoughts and praises on Devi flow so easily. I

have seem some very good outpourings on the list in the past few weeks. I

haven't felt this inadequate before.

Here is a sincere prayer to Her in kannada -

nAyAramma, karedarU nii baravudilla vennalu

Who am I to be upset with You that You don't come to me when I call You? Who

am I?

I am not anything like Sri.RamaChandra, personification of a perfect son who

said "janani janmabhUmishcha swargaadapi garIyasi".

I am definitely not like Sri.Shankara who said "there can be a bad son, but

never a bad mother"

What to say of Sri.RamakrishNa who glorified all women as his mother.

Who am I to be upset with You that You don't come to me when I call You? Who

am I?

The vedas have proclaimed "mAtR^i devo bhava". I know them not.

I surely don't know to meditate on thee as Aham brahmAsmi

That you are my only refuge is my only knowledge.

Who am I to be upset with You that You don't come to me when I call You? Who

am I?

Oh mother, please don't delay anymore

In which other way shall I call you

Please fulfill my wish just this once

Who am I to be upset with You that You don't come to me when I call You? Who

am I?

Please come and reside on my tongue,

even if it be for a few minutes,

so I can fulfill an obligation to my brother.

Who am I to be upset with You that You don't come to me when I call You? Who

am I?

Sri.Ravi lovingly calls me as his sister in all his mails, though i don't

know if i deserve it. Hence the reference to brother in the last line of the

above prayer.

Here is a bhajan my grandfather taught me when we were school children. I

don't even feel competent to give a good translation. Some other kannada

list member perhaps may help in correcting me.

Approximate English Translation

Oh sharadAmbe, I have full faith in you. Oh witness of the entire

manifestation, I have complete faith in you. (pallavi)

Your sweet speech is like that of a nightingale, and your hold a lotus in

one hand which is an epitome of purity. Oh learned Goddess, your beautiful

braids verily resemble lord aadishesha. Oh supreme among goddesses, you play

the veeNa beautifully.

Other learned goddesses together invoke you (refers to the fact that

everyone does saraswati pooja before commencing their studies) and proclaim

you as the goddess of learning. Oh lotus eyed one! Oh moonfaced one you

adorn the throne of learning (reference to Saraswathi ascending the sarvajna

peeta?)

Your reside in Sringeri, the very place that transcends creation as the

crowned queen of the creator (Brahma) with a book in one hand, and bestowing

learning and discipline to one and all. ( - the reference here is to the

incident where Sri.SankarachArya saw a serpent giving protection to a

pregnant frog. Story goes to say that after seeing this, Sri.SankarAcharya

decided to establish his dakshinAmnaya Mutt here as he was really impressed

by this incident. The fact that a snake can have that much compassion for a

frog, who is actually its prey says something special about the place)

Corrections welcome,

Dear Sister,

Thank you very much for your poem. I am grateful to you for granting my

request.

Swami Yogananda once said that a right proportion to develop reasoning power

is: If you read for one hour, you should write about it for two hours and

contemplate on it for three hours. Later he added that one should meditate more

than that. Writing really helps in clarifying one's own understanding. In

general, I request the members, to write about it whenever they read something

related to ambaaL. That not only helps them, it helps many like me as well.

About Bala. I do not remember whether he wrote any introduction about himself.

But it is my duty to do so. He is a very devoted disciple of shrI mAtA

amR^itAnandamayI. I have learnt many many valuable lessons from him. Recently,

ammachi personally selected a bride for him and got him married in Her presence

in keraLa. Literally with the same care and attention with which one's own

mother would do (or more than that). I was amazed by this. How dear Bala should

be amma (who has millions of devotees) for Her to do that! It is indeed a

privilege for me to call him my friend.

Thanks again.

With respects,

Ravi
