Guest guest
Verse 13: munnavaLAyth thirumAl, piraman muthal mUvarukkum; sinnavaLAy mathuraippathi aaLpavaL sengkaiyilE kannalum pAsamum kiLLaiyum koNda kayaRkaNiyAm annavaLaip paNivOrkkuilai enRum arun-thuyarE 13. You are the Ancient(Primordial) to Vishnu,Siva and Brahma (First Trinity)! With a small figure you rule over Madurai! You hold sugarcane (that symbolises samsara-bitter and sweet), Rope or noose of Pasha (the binding that fastens the beings to to themselves and one another) and Parrot in your lovely hands. Oh Mother Angayarkanni! there is no misery for those who worship you!! The murthy of Meenakshi in Madurai Temple is small as She is of 'Mangai' - early teen age; thus the poet says as 'small figure'. I am not sure of the symbolisms i have interpreted. Please correct me if i am wrong. I dont know what parrot stands for. It would be nice if somebody could explain the symbolisms of Mother's accessories.. anthati = antham+aathi End of one is beginning of another. It is a form of poetry in Tamil where phrase or words in the end of a poem become(s) the beginning of the next one. For example, V.12, last line's last word munnavale = ancient one, becomes V.13. first line 's first word. Anthati poems are symbolic of Srishti - where manifestation and destruction (end and beginning) are not isolated but in continuum in a large dimensions.
