Guest guest
Namaste, Please consider the following as my ramblings. There are some names in the sahasranaamam that I find very appealing. One in particular is svaatmaananda laviibhuuta brahmaadyaananda sa.ntatiH I have read in a book on the life of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa how he repeatedly implores (am quoting from memory, could be incorrect, but i think the idea is conveyed) "O Mother, do not give me the dry bliss of Brahman. Please let me enjoy your divine leelas and not be merged in advaitic bliss" This I think was AFTER he had become a realised soul. I apologize to Ravi in advance for my impertinence (and impatience) but could he please post the commentary of bhaskararAya for this nAmA with meaning. Also could other members please add their thoughts on this name. I will be very thankful. I don't understand philosophy, but is this the sentiment echoed in the SriVaishnava tradition (and also by the nAyanmAr saints and others like Sant Tukaram, Jnaneshwar etc..) Regards, Sridhar. Guest guest
In the commentary on lalitaa sahasranaam by T.V. Narayana Menon, published by Mata Amritanandamayi Center, it says about this mantra, "Even one intstant of that bliss makes life immortal and invaluable. Devii is the pure manifestation of that amritaanandam -- immortal bliss." This nAma celebrates ambaaL as non-dual nirguNa brahman. It says that speck of HER bliss excels the totality of the bliss of brahma, vishhNu, rudra and all others. Commentary on the name kalyANii (trishatii) by shankara is quite related to that name and the same shruti quotes from taittiriya upanishad in shankara bhAshya is also used in bhAsakararAya's commentary. Hence, contrary to what shrI Ramakrishna and all other dvaita, vishiShtaadvaita teachers claim. shruti affirms that there is no comparison between the nirguNa brahman and the insignificant joy of those in the world of duality. It is like the difference between the amount water in the ocean and the amount you can hold in a tea-spoon. But it is not unusual for bhakta-s to make such claims that they prefer duality to worship ambaaL. niilakaNTha dIxita goes one step further says if moxa does not permit him to list to ambaaL's glories, and whorship such a moxa is a great danger than a blessing: "apavarga mahopasargaH". Asks mInAxI to give him moxa which meets his needs. nAham sahe tava katha shravAntarayam nAmham sahe tava padArchana vichyutim vA moxam dishaitata na viruddham chet syAt naivastu mAtaH apavarga mahopasargaH (I am quoting this from memory, it has few errors) But wherever there is duality, there is pain. One has to ride to waves with crests of joy and sorrows and troughs of indifference. This applies to the duality between bhakta and bhagavati. Arguments like I do not want to be sugar and I want to taste it,will not hold any water. Because, brahman is not inert like sugar. It is sat, chit, and Ananda. It not only exists (sat), it is perfectly conscious of it (chit as it is pure consciousness) and its state is unalloyed bliss (ananda). Depth of this bliss is unfathomable. That is why shruti affirms "etasyaivAnandasya anyAni bhUtani mAtra upajIvanti". That is what this name is also affirms sayings that a speck of HER bliss is much greater that brahma and all others put together. My series on LS is slow, please feel free to post the names which apeal to you. It will give us all another chance to contemplate on ambaaL. BTW thanks for posting pApanAsham shivan's KRtis on ambaaL. Ravi
