Koodal = Madurai Shyamala= dark-hued woman Verse 19: irukaNNi^nai ni^n tirumE^nikku Akki itayatti^nap parukumpaTi ni^n tiruvaTikku Akki naRpATalukkE urukumpaTi e^n irucevikku Akki^na^n oLLilaivEl muruka^nait tanta muzumutalE! vantu mu^n niRpaiyE Mother Angayarkanni! Mother of Muruga with a Vel, that is luminous and pupil-leaf shaped; I dedicated my eyes to appreciate your Divine Form (the murthy in the temple); my heart to glean (the bliss) from your Feet; my ears to rejoice in songs about you; Please give me your Darshan! Vel= spear; shakti+vel; Karthikeya is carved out of Mother for the destruction of Soorapadma. While all the other Gods give him accessories, His mother Parvati gives Him a Golden spear, that becomes the source and symbol of His guard and power to protect his devotees.Muruga is Pranavaswaroopa. Omnipotent and Unmanifest Mother is His mother who gives Him power in the form of Vel. It would be nice if someone could explain in detail the true meaning of this puranic incidence.
