Namaste,

A different description is given in the booklet, "The Greatness

of Sringeri", a TattvAloka [splendor of Truth] Publication, 1991, of

the Sringeri Math.

On page 8: ...."Tradition has it that after the great

philosopher had dispersed all the non-Vaidic creeds through this land

of Bharata Varshha, he was on the look-out for a convenient and holy

place where he could found an institution to spread the truths of the

Advaita Vedanta.

He came to Sringeri where on the bank of the Tunga River he

saw an unusual sight. A cobra spread out its hood over a frog in

labor pains, to give shadow from the scorching sun. Struck with the

sanctity of the place which could infuse love between natural

enemies, he chose it to set up a matha. He spent there over 12 years

of his all-too precious life of 32 years. This should give us an idea

of the esteem the great Sankaracharya had for this holy spot."

on page 14: " The Temple of Sri Sarada originally consisted of a

yantra carved on a rock in the middle of the Tunga river by Sri

Sanakaracharya with a sandal-wood image installed on it, and covered

by a thatched roof. The present golden image dates from the time of

Sri Vidyaranya, the Acharya who added the luxury of a tiled roof."

The only recourse to resolve the differences may be to seek the

guidance of the Mathadhipati, Swami Bharati Tirtha.

Regards,

sunder
