Guest guest
Dear Sri Sundar, Thanks for your response. "THERE ARE SEVERAL SAMKARA VIJAYAMS... MADHAVIYA SAMKARA VIJAYAM is perhaps the most widely read." (1) Conscecration of Sarada on the bank of Tunga Bhadra river is one of the chief incidents of Sankaracharya's life. Nava Kalidasa Madhava Vidyaranya in his Sankara Dig Vijayam states that Sankaracharya consecrated the deity only on the bank of Tunga Bhadra river(not Tunga). " Nearby flows the TUNGABHADRA, which brings good to all who bathe in its waters.. There at Sringa giri , he had a temple, as graceful as those of Indra loka, built and installed therein an image of the Divine Mother and istituted Her forms of worship... So he installed Her at Sringa-Giri under the name of Mother Sarada, and there SHE RESIDES EVEN TODAY, GRANTING DEVOTEES' PRAYERS." (2) There is no mention about the establishment on the Tunga river in any of the Sankara Vijayams. But Some publications similar to the booklet quoted by you, attempt to convince the readers that Sankara had set up the establishment on the bank of Tunga. (3) " The holy Kudali kshetra is situated at the confluence of the rivers Tunga and Bhadra , rich in natural beauty, about nine miles from Shimoga in Karnataka...Here stand the great temples of Rameswara, Brahmeswara and Chintamani Narasimha as memorials, of the historic exploits of the Greart Hoysalas. Along with these are the Mutt of the Kudali Sri Sringeri Jagatguru and ancient temples of Sri Sarada and Sri Sankaracharya, facts well known to all..." (4) "...Samastha sishyakotigal sametharaai Aacharyal TUNGABHADRA KUDALIYIL Sri Sarada Pratishtai seidadhu Yudishtra Sakam 2648 Panguni Shukla navami."(5) With Regards, BGS (1)THE THRONE OF TRANSCENDENTAL WISDOM Sri Samkaracharya's Sarada Pitha in sringeri, Third Edition- Revised, by K.R.Venkatraman, Retired of Public Instruction, Pudukkottai, Page 12. Guest guest
Namaste, I am not sure what purpose this debate will serve, but would like to point out other references also: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucgadkw/position/shank-jyot-ascii.html William Cenkner, A Tradition of Teachers - Sankara and The Jagadgurus Today, Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi, 1983, pp. 109-110, mentions an early 20th-century challenge to the Sringeri Sankaracharya. This statement can be traced to Cenkner's rather blind reliance on a Kanchi matha publication (A. Nataraja Aiyer and S. Lakshminarasimha Sastri, The Traditional Age of Sri Sankaracharya and The Maths, Minerva Press, Madras, 1962). However, this book only describes a succession controversy in the Kudali matha, dating back to 1875 CE. The Kudali matha, which is said to have originated as a branch of the Sringeri matha, is situated near the confluence of the rivers Tunga and Bhadra. Kudali and other old branches of Sringeri have their own independent lineages, which have branched off from the Sringeri list at some point in the past. The succession dispute at the Kudali matha has still not been resolved, and there continue to be two competing lineages there today. Obviously, the controversy in the succession of Kudali matha does not affect the main Sringeri lineage, and it is very surprising that Cenkner seems not to realize this. It must also be mentioned that Aiyer and Sastri are only interested in proclaiming the Kanchi matha's supremacy over all other mathas. Among other curiously partisan statements, they attempt to prove that Kudali is the "original" Sringeri matha, and that the Sringeri matha itself is a "neo-Sringeri" matha. Aiyer and Sastri are also quoted in Volume III of The Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies - Advaita Vedanta up to Sankara and His Pupils, edited by Karl Potter, where Sankara's disciple, Sureswara, is said to have been especially associated with the Kanchi matha. It should be obvious that the political relationships among the various mathas, succession disputes within a matha, and the consequent propaganda literature have started to adversely affect academic discussions of Advaita and Advaitins. Many publications from the Department of Philosophy in the University of Madras have also been affected by this. http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/avhp/ad-today.html Other maThas: Other than the four AmnAya maThas, there are a number of well-known maThas owing allegiance to advaita and the SankarAcArya lineage. Many of them were originally branches of one of the four AmnAya maThas, established officially by the parent maTha, and which grew into more or less independent institutions over time. Notable among these are the branch maThas at Kumbhakonam (now based in Kancipuram, Contact Address: No. 1, Salai Street, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu 631 502, INDIA), Sankhesvar, Kudali, Virupaksha (Hampi), Kolhapur (Karavir pITham), Sivaganga, Sakatapuram etc. In recent times, the maTha at Kancipuram has been very active. Sometimes, notable sannyAsIs of the daSanAmI order start their own maThas, to cater to the spiritual needs of their followers. An example is the famous upanishad brahmendra maTha at Kancipuram, which was founded in the 18th century by rAmacandrendra sarasvatI. Sometimes, succession controversies (as in the present Jyotirmath) also leads to the establishment of separate maThas. A few maThas of the nambUdiri community in Kerala also trace their foundation to Sankara himself, as do the sumeru and pAdukA maThas in Varanasi. However, the Kavale maTha of the gauDa sArasvata community in Goa traces its origin in 740 CE not to SankarAcArya, but through another disciple of govinda bhagavatpAda.
