It is found in the Thiru ViLaiyaadal PuraaNam. The earliest T.V.PuraaNam is dated around 10th century. The more popular one is later. There is also a Halaasya PuraaNam or Halaasya Maahaatmyam in Sanskrit. However haalasya is said to be great Devi peetham in Devi giita, but it does not mention the story. Even Devi Bhagavatham does not mention this any where. Markandeya puranam,Devi Bhagavatham,Lalitopakhyaanam,Tripura Rahasya- mahatmya khanda etc...These are considered to be genuiine and old traditionally regards >Regards > >JayBee Get 250 color business cards for FREE! http://businesscards.lycos.com/vp/fastpath/

And even many upanishads are like that. One of my vaishhNava contacts even questioned me the validity/authenticity of trishati bhaashhyam. I do not get offended or ruffled (personally) by these comments though. It is quite easy to ignore these, at least for me. I did not want to jump into this controversial thread. Please bear in mind that is mainly a devotional forum. And controversial subjects are *not* welcome. If you believe that shankara's "malyadhvajatipasute" or agastya's bhaje paaNDya baalam is a false understanding by these achArya-s. It is *your* belief, and the burden of proof rests on you. Do not make a controversy out of it here, you may want consider publishing well researched article on one of the indological journals. Besides, for many, tiruviLaiyaaDal puuraaNam and periya puraaNam are not mere stories, but a narration of actual incidents that happened. Also, for most bhakta-s besides these works and other (possible) works of nAyanmArs, shankara's miinaaxi stotram and agastya's yoga miinaaxii stotram is more than adequate to accept.
