There is a mention of 5 types of similarities between

Shiva and Devi. Similarity of name ,form and 3 other things .

can somebody explain this in detail?

There is an explantion that Shiva is

"one who gives sukham(parama ananda sukham)-represented by "sh" and

amritatva(immortality) - represented by "va.

may be shivaa can also be interpreted in the same way.

regards

And it is supported by quotes from liN^ga puraaNa.

shiva abhedaa vaa shivaa

shivaa is non-different from shiva.

tat.h abhedhasya pravR^itti nivR^ittitaa cha liN^ga puraaNe darshitaa

Both extrinsic and intrinsic aspects of that non-difference is described

(seen) in liN^ga puraaNam.

"yathaa shivaH tathaa devii yathaa devii tathaa shivaH

"as shiva is so is devii, and as devii is so is shiva"

tasmaat abhedha buddhi eva shiveti kathayantu umaam"

Because of this notion of non-difference umaa is called shivaa.

(this quote is from liN^ga puraaNa)

tatra eva sthala antare

In the same text elsewhere (in some other section)

"uma-shankarayoH bheda naasti eva paramaarthataH

Ultimately (at supreme level) there is no difference between umaa and

shankara,

paramaatma shivaH proktaH shivaa sa eva prakiirtite" iti

the same paramaatma is spoken as shiva and is also celebrated as shivaa"

By the first quote the external aspect of the identity is established

(indicated by pravR^itti or flowing outward, root of vRtti is indeed the

basis for english word vortex, classically pravRtti and nivRtti is used in a

different sense in terms of activity and its renunciation), and second quote

establishes the idenity at the highest and internal aspect. It is same stuff

which is the basis of all "paramaatma" is called shiva and it is also called

shakti, hence ambaaL is called shivaa. The first quote is quite cryptic, it

can be interpreted in many ways. Truly when shiva is seen as linga the base

indeed is yoni representing shakti and when ambaaL is worshipped in

shrIchakra as trishatii uttara piiThika says its is nothing but

shiva-shakti-aikyam. They are externally same as ardhanAriishvara and

internally same as the supreme brahman called by different names.

As always, my ignorance is well known, and your corrections and comments will

be gratefully accepted (I should create web page with a detailed disclaimer

so that I don't have to type it again and again). Even though I thought about

this sometime back, I gave myself only 15 minutes to type it, you can then

imagine the level of errors.
