namaste,

Tapas (penance ) is said to be of three types.

sAtvika,rAjasa & tAmasa

sAtvika is said to be followed by Gods & Ascetics

tAmasa tapas is that which has a passionate end in view.

rAjasa by danavas(demons) & humans

rAjasa tapas consists of subjecting the body to torture

and it has a specific desire in end.

sAtvika is said to be the best of all.

sAtvika tapas includes japa,meditation, worship

of iShTa devatas, control of senses, purity of body & mind

charity,ahimsa,truthfulness going on pilgrimages etc.

also observance of fasts like- kR^cChra,cAndrAyana etc.

Shiva Purana -umA Sa.nhita- Chapter 20.

however people initiated into Srividya are not allowed

to observe such fasts cAndrAyana etc.
