trAyate iti explains only the "tra" part of tantra. More important

aspect of it is "tan" - tanoti. tan means extend or stretch. tantra

is that which extends and explains the theory (of mantra, tattva

etc.) to a pratical application or ritual, thus it protects the one

who practises it. I remember reading somewhere that sandhya vAndana

is a tantra of veda, in that sense.

This is my understanding. I may be wrong and I am open to corrections.

As an aside, many (in the past including me) treat "tantra" as if it

is a bad word. This notion arises out of ignorance and

misunderstanding. In any field of knowledge, bad and debased elements

somehow enter. For that one can not shut out the field itself. Also,

I think, one has to see whether it is in line with shruti and smRti,

only if it is not it has to rejected.

As the famous tamil saying goes, "guru illa kalvi paazh" that is,

*any* education without a guru will not come into fruition or will go

waste. What is fit or not for a person is to be decided by one's

guru. This is important because medicine for one person can become

poison for another. If one does not have a guru, it is better to

take guidance from reliable sources such as AchArya-s of shringeri or

kAnchi maTha, and also use a lot of common sense.
