Respected members,

 

I have heard a dhyAna shlokam for the saundarya laharI which I am

trying to reproduce below. Could someone please give me a corrected

version of the same (in case it contains errors, which is EXTREMELY

likely) and also tell me if this is part of some other work ?

 

bhUmau skalita pAdAnAm, bhUmirevAvalambanam |

tvayI jAtA parArtAnAm, tvameva sharaNam shive ||

This is not a dhyAna shloka. It is a verse seeking forgiveness for

the possible errors that come in chanting and it the work etc. My

understanding of this verse is:

 

Even through we trod on the ground with our feet (it is a sign of

disrespect to keep one's feet on anything), when we fall, the same

ground alone becomes our refuge. Likewise for any aparAta against you

that comes into being (in the process of chanting etc), o ShivA you

alone are my refuge.

 

 

it is jAta aparAtAnAm in the verse.

verse compares the compassion of bhumA devI and seeks for

forgiveness. I do not think it is part of saundaryalahArI.

 

 

Aside: This verse reminds me of a nice verse in thirukkuRaL by saint

thiruvaLLuvar:

 

agazhvAraith thAngum nilampolath thammai

igazhvArp poruththal thalai

 

Like the ground which supports those who dig hole in it, one should

exercise patience and forbearance to those who speak ill of him/her.

This is the best attitude.

 

Of course, I cannot match the preciseness and beauty even to one

millionth of a percent of the original verse with my approximate

translation.
