sahyAdrau vihitatrivarShatapasoH pratyakShatAmeyuShI .

bhUbhartre dadatI punarmanupada.n vaishyAya bodhapradA

roddhu.n ghorakr^itAntasainyamiha me durgaiva durgAyatAm .. 17 ..

 

Hearing the greatness of Devi as related by the R^Si sumedhas, King suratha

performed tapas on Mt.Sahyadri for three years and got a vision of the

Goddess. She gave the king the position of Manu again and gave the boon of

self-realisation to the vaishya. Let that Goddess Durga become a fort for me

to stop the terrible army of kr^tAnta, the god of death.

Thanks a lot for posting this series.

 

Actually, devI gives the kingdom back to suratha and and then gives

him a boon that he will be born to Lord sUrya and his wife savarNaa

and will be known as sAvarNi and become the next manu. I understand

that the construct "bhUbhartre dadatI punarmanupada.n" does not

convey that clearly. But it is clear in devI mAhAtymam See that from

the verse 13 of the last chapter. I am giving the gist here.

devi spoke

 

svalpairahobhirnR^ipate svarAjyaM prApsyate bhavAn.h .. 20..

 

hatvA ripUnaskhalitaM tava tatra bhaviShyati .. 21..

 

 

In few days O king you will get back your kingdom after killing your

enemies and it will last with you (till you die).

 

mR^itashcha bhUyaH samprApya janma devAdvivasvataH .. 22..

sAvarNiko nAma manurbhavAnbhuvi bhaviShyati .. 23..

 

After your death, you will be born to Lord vivasvAn (and his wife

sAvarNa) will be known as sAvarNi and become the next manu.

 

 

evaM devyA varaM labdhvA surathaH kshatriyarShabhaH .

sUryAjjanma samAsAdya sAvarNibha.rvitA manuH .. 28..

 

By this boon of devi, the foremost of xatriya-s will be born to sUrya

and become the manu known as sAvarNi.
