To this additional axaara-s are added for various reasons. According to some schools of thought, "shriim" is added to panchadashaaxari to make is shodashaaxari in conformance to the shruti (R^ig veda V 47-4) which states that 4 iim-s in a mantra will add greatness to it. Besides this reasoning there are few other as well. Why do we need many of these? That is because not all aspirants are same. For many bacterial infections both penicillin and tetracycline will do the job of removing the infection. The physician, however, based on the needs of patient will prescribe the correct antibiotic. Penicillin may work for some, but may be fatal for others. Similarly one's guru determines what mantra is appropriate for the disciple. Of course, none of these mantra-s are "over the counter" and guru is required to prescribe it. My 2c. Ravi
