Though chid ambalm has a philosophical import, I think chiRu ambalam is also

correct. Govindaraja swami’s shrine is referred as perambalam periya-ambalam

as he was there even before nataraaja danced in chidambaram. It is referred

as punDarIka kshetram in the puraNa. I might be totally wrong.

My 2 cents :

 

Chittrambalam is indeed chiru + ambalam.

 

Chid+ambaram refers to the "Dahara+akasham" and this

space or ether is in the heart. It is the smaller

space(chiru), compared to "Mahakasham" or the space

that pervades everything, the Tamil word for

CHidambaram is therefore chiru ambalam.
