Meaning:

The hens started shouting, so are the sparrows. The

yAz and white conches(chaN^gu) produced their sound

everywhere. We are singing the Supreme Luminance,

Supreme Grace and the great things, didn't you listen

? What a sleep it is, long live ! Open your mouth. Is

this the way of loving the One with the disc weapon in

His hand ? One who stood beyond the deluge, Him, who

shares the body with the slim lady (umA) (it could

also be interpreted as the Partner of poor), let us

sing !

disc weapon? Ganesh, can you explain more. I do see one or two

possible ways. But would like to know what you think.

 

The text I have takes term "aazhiyaan anbuDaimai" as a single term

and interprets its from traditional tamil "agam" style. Which is

totally different from the above.

Dear Ravi,

 

(I had responded to this yesterday, but for whatever reason I am not

able to see that in the list today. So am once agin responding.

Sorry, if this is a repeat.)

 

The word AziyAn could be translated in different ways.

1. Azi - chakra. AziyAn means the Lord Shiva. During the jalandara

samhAra, the Lord drew a disc in the ground and dared the daemon to

lift it up on his head. When he tried to do so, it cut off his head.

This is the sudarshana chakra later given to mahAviShNu when the

later offered the eye itself as lotus to the Lord. (pls refer to

jalandarAri at http://www.shaivism.org/machal.html). This is the

meaning taken in this ThiruvempAvai translation.

2. Azi - ocean. So AziyAn anbuDaimai would then mean the love as deep

as the ocean. Taking this way we could interpret this thiruvempAvai

line as, "Is this how your ocean like love ?"

 

Nice question and in fact we were discussing the same line

last week here with some devotees. (I have not referred to many of

the translations, and am writing in free style from the source

mostly. So verylikely that there could be some more different

interpretations.)
