The text of the song as such has just "alaiyaay". Your explanation lends

more feeling to the song.

 

Wave by itself is representative of something that occurs repeatedly.

Bhartrhari in his vairAgya shataka compares manoratha (wish) to waters and

trShNA (desire) to waves. When one starts to wish for something repeatedly

or continuously, then it is becomes a desire.
