Guest guest
colin wrote Dear Colin, Devas and asuras churned the milk ocean to get the celestial nectar, using meru mountain and vasuki snake, while doing so because od pain vasuki emitted poison and also first poison came from the ocean unable to bear the poison devas ran to Lord Shiva to save them. Our Lord who is the great embodiment of compassion consumed that poison our Mother then held Her hands at the throat of our Lord and the poison stayed there so He is called Nilakantan. This happened on a Ekadasi day (11th) then they churned the ocean on that night also then on the 12th morning amrudham came and by the trick of Maha Vishnu who as Mohini distributed the amrudham only to Devas. Devas realised that they had forgotten to thank Lord Shiva for saving them from alalam(poison) so they went to Kailash on thrayodashi(13th) day. Our Lord the Thyagaraja who consumed poison for the sake of His devotees danced with Mother between the horns of Nandi Devar. Vishnu was beating the drum, Narathat Yazh , Saraswathi the veena and all the Devas worshipped the Lord and Mother. So this time of the day is called Pradosham. Like Sivarathri there are five types of Pradosham also Nithya pradosham (daily), paksha pradosham (leading to new moon), Matha pradosham(leading to full moon), Sani Maha prathosam as this happened on a Saturday the pradosham coming on Saturday is considered Maha Pradosham(great) and Pralaya pradosham, when the great deluge happens and every soul enters the feet of our Lord that is Pralaya Pradosham. Shivarathri again is the end of the world by great deluge. every soul including Brahma and Vishnu enter the feet of our Lord and at that point our kind Mother prays throughout the night to our Lord to start procreation that night is Shivarathri. regards Muruganandam
