As I know the bell symbolises alertness or conciousness. Thus when one does that

they are kind of attemping to go to a high level of conciousness. I dont know

how the whole process works but that is one explanation.

Dear Bharani,

As per mantra for ringing the bell before starting

pooja, "the sound invites Devatas, and sends away

Rakshasas from the place; place of pooja gets

purified; also, devatas are pleased with this sound".

As for big temple bells, it makes people know conduct

of particular 'kaala' pooja so that they can join the

worship.

Best wishes,

L Vaidyanathan

My understanding is Sabda, Sparsa, Roopa Rasa and Gandha are the Pancha

Gyandendria sand belongs to Manomaya Kosha. The sadhaka/upasaka has to approach

the deities with Prnamaya then Manomaya and finally with Vigyanamaya Koshas. The

Anandamaya Kosha is unified system bell is a symbolic representation of first

ananga of manomaya kosha.
