Notes: 1. This is the glorious namchchivAya thiruppadhikam sung by thirunyAna sambandhar. 2. On the day of his wedding, sambandhar took along his wife and went into the abode of nallUrp perumaNam, followed by the other devotees like murugar, nIlanakkar, yAzppANar. sambandhar's focus was in unifying in the Supreme and not in leading the married life. sambandhar pleaded to the Lord that the words of His praise he sang, should be upheld to be truth (mulaiththaDam mUzgiya bOgangaLAyavum ...). In front of that flawless devotee appeared a flame ! Emphasizing to this world the message he lived throughout conveying, "Hold tight namaH shivAya, that is the easy was to the supreme state !", sambandhar along with the bride entered the flame followed by many devotees to reach at the Holy Feet of the Supreme. This is the padhikam he sang circumambulating the flame before entering it. ===== --------------------------- Visit Shaivism Home Page at http://www.shaivam.org --------------------------- Movies - coverage of the 74th Academy Awards® http://movies./

Hence, entering the fire has a symbolic meaning, as Lord subrahmaNya was born from the fire that came out third eye of the Lord shiva. The same symbolism comes in a different way in the incarnation of kumarila bhaTTa, who also entered the fire (of rice husk as a penance for going against his buddhist teacher and to stress the importance of the vedic prayashchitta-s). One of the talks by kAnchi paramacharya in deivattin kural touches this topic. Ravi
Guest guest
Dear Ravi, Saint Arunagirinathar indicates this idea (that sambandhar is avatar of subrahmanya) in many thiruppugaz. For ex. vazudhi kUn n^imirththiya perumALE, amaN n^Icharai vAdhu venRa chikAmaNi mayilvIrA etc. While the periya purANam details the previous state of sundharar and mentions that of appar, is silent about that of sambandhar. So many of the Shaivite scholars do not to this view. But sambandhar's name was supposed to be piLLaiyAr which is the name of murugan in thamiz. (archaic usage) namaH shivAya love, Ganesh --------------- > 4.
