miinaaxi amman piLLai tamizh

I was browsing Austing public library catalogue and came across a work

on piLLai thamizh. Here is a verse from it. This verse was sung by MSS

(i think when she was 80 - for a album release on Sri Meenakshi.

 

This verse is toTukkum kaTavut ..., English translation is from the

book.

Fragrant taste flowing from sweet Tamil

with its full, honeyed, poetic themes!

 

 

Lamp lighting up the temple of the mind

of each devotee who roots out egotism!

 

 

Soft young elephant playing among the rising peaks

of the Himalaya Mountains!

 

 

Painting come to life, envisioned and contemplated

in the holy mind of He who transcends

this world girt by tossing oceans!

 

 

Young vañci creeper

in whose forest of tresses bees drink!

 

 

Come, great life whom Malayattuvacan * begot!

Come, come.

Very true. I have a book on miinaatchiyamman piLLai tamizh with

translation by pu. chi. punnaivananaathan (what a beautiful name, I

first encountered this name in paTTinattar paaDalkal), published by

shaiva siddhanta society of thirunelveli. In the introduction,

translator mentions this incident.

 

I bought this book in 1994 (for last six years, I did not even open

it), yesterday when I was reading it I could appreciate many of the

sentiments of piLLai tamizh, as I have an one year old daughter

called amRitavarshhiNi. In 1994, I could not somehow connect very

much with it and thus it disappeared in my bookshelf.

Now things like mutta paruvam, chappani paruvam, etc. makes so much

more sense.
