After initiation of Gayatri, one learns Vedas (does Agni upaasana in Samidaathanam). At the wedding, the grihasta takes up Agniaathanam for doing Agnihotram for his life time. (such a person is called Tarunaagnihotri). Such a grihasta has to do ishtis (small yajnas) 2 times a month (sukhla and krishna paksha pratamas), besides a Varsheeka yajna (once a year). Doing sapta soma yajnas is left to the grihasta depending on his capability. At least one soma yajna is advisable. Over a period, we all took up different roles which prevented us from doing the vedic chores - essential duty ordained on us for Loga Kshemartham. Still, I have seen some grihastas doing this despite being employed. Any interested person in Agnihotram will easily learn the mantras and by practice, can make it a regular one. Minor problems (limitations) are availability of 4 ritviks (who know Srowta)on ishti days, you can do it on a ground floor only, etc which can be overcome by determination. I pray, Lord Yajneswara give you the opportunity to worship Him and obtain bliss. Guest guest
Hariom, Adding my cent worth to the conversation, Every Agni hotri has to do the following in addition to what has been mentioned: 1. Be present personally or through his wife at the time of Agnihotra both morning and evening else it amounts to agninasha. 2. Darsha pournamasa ishtis happen twice every month requiring 4 priests to act as hotr, brahma, adhvaryu and agneedra minimum. Which means a dependance again for the same. 3. A cow, is indispensable as one requires milk and other products daily for agnihotra. 4.Besides the varshika nirudapashubandha there are the chaturmasyas, agrayani and a host of minor ishtis, plus a pinda pitru yagna every darsha. 5. The cost involved in maintaining agni is very high with dakshinas being high and a simple soma yaga is a minimum 3.5 lakhs, not to speak about the rest like soutramani, of course many are clubbed after the first jyotishtoma. Also a deep commitment and understanding of Shrouta is necessary, what i mean is the pashu offered is suffocated and the vapa and anga homas take place, every year in Niruda pashubandha and morein soma yaga. Before avabhruta and udayaniyeshti the remnants (a teaspoon) is eaten by the Yajamana. These may not appeal to many. Agnihotra is defined in the Mimamsa and the vedas as a Kamya and not Nitya, but there are other views conflicting also. The same may be found in Ashvalayana, apastamba and Bodhayana shroutha, grihya and dharma sutras. Therefore relying upon the vedic injunction " Swarga kaamo jyotishtomo yajet" we can say it is a kamya and not nitya. But Taittareya vakya"agnihotram cha swadhyaya na pravachanecha" makes it mandatory. It is better to adhere to grihyagni/aupasana in present day that agnihotra. Bodhayana allows the same stating that one who has Grihyagni is not to be treated as a durbrahmana. Cultural adjustments, present circumstances may not allow actual agnihotra, but for the blessed few who still continue or who may take upeven today, i bow my head with respect.
