By nAma smaraNa is meant saying things like lalitAmbikAyai namaH...parameshvaryai namaH or saying lalitAmbike, srilalite etc...at random whenever feels like remembering Devi for which nothing is required. Reciting Lalita Sahasranama involves starting with "Asya shrI lalitA divya sahasranAma stotra mantrasya, vashinyAdi vAgdevAta RshayaH...." followed by nyasa etc.. for which initiation is required. Ravi informed me that HH The present Shankaracharya of Shringeri permitted a person to recite the Lalita Sahasranama without initiation into SriVidya . I was informed that the Kanchi Acharyas too suggested a particular person to recite LS without Srividya. But the above two cases are very rare. There have been more cases where the acharyas did not permit LS recital without initiation. The best thing is to stick to what the LS says about itself i.e "not to recite without initiation". If an individual finds it difficult to follow that rule, then he/she may consider writing to the Acharyas of Shringeri and Kanchi and get their suggestion. Each sadhaka may get a different suggestion based on theri capbilities etc..it will be wrong to start reciting LS without initiation just becoz some other sadhaka was permitted to do so without SriVidya. For the actual verse in LS epilogue mentioning the restriction please refer the posting by Ravi /message/3463 /message/3474 also refer Shri Harshnanda's reply to above /message/3519 LS is not a stotra, it is a mantra. That is the view of Bhaskararaya swamin who commented on LS. Personally, I would prefer to wait and see comments of learned member's of this list. rgds > > , "sivadancer <sivadancer>" <sivadancer> wrote: > AUM gaM gaNapataye namaH > > Namaste, > > I know the Lalita Sahasranama initiation issue has been discussed > extensively in the past, but here are two messages that seem to > contradict each other...can anyone please clarify this issue once and > for all (if possible)? > > shrii lakshhmInR^siMhaarpaNamastu > > > , "satisharigela <satisharigela>" > <satisharigela> wrote: > > shrIH > > > > > Hello, > > > I want to chant Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam. Guest guest
The names of the Devi should be repeated as japa is done? One should use a mala as well and practice in repeating her names as well or this way of repeating is prohibited?

Not necessarily. May be we can do that if we like. I am not aware of any particular rules for nAma smaraNa. >One should > use a mala as well and practice in repeating her names as well or > this way of repeating is prohibited? We need not use a mala. I dont know if that is prohibited or not. In general nAma smaraNa means remembering(or saying aloud) the name/names of Shiva or Devi whenever one is reminded of them, and that can be done at any time and at any place. The act of using a mala and saying a mantra is called Japa, which is usually done when someone has initiation into something. rgds
