Guest guest
SUB : Gayatri Mantra -- Argyam and Tharpanam Gayatreem Chandasam Matha edam Brahma Jushasva na : The Gayathri who is the well-known Veda Matha should accept my prayers in this mantra and bless me. goes the meaning of this sthuthi. The Gaythri mantra, which is also known as the MAHA MANTRA, remains as the heart of the nithya karma "THE SANDYA VANDANA" which has to be done by every Brahmin 3 times daily. The purpose for which the sandya vandana is done is to meditate the Brahma Swarupini GAYATRI DEVI in the heart of the doer daily and to pray to the Sun daily 3 times. A Brahmin who ignores or does not understand the importance of the sandya vandanam is un fit or in competent to perform any other karma as per VEDAS including any Upasana including the SRI VIDYA upasana. Where a single generation of Brahmin ignores the sandya vandana and if this continues in the next progeny for further 3 generation then all the three generations become only brahmana bhandoos ( relative of Brahmin) and from the fourth generation onwards they become non Brahmins as per MAHA PERIVAL"S speech. The Vedas gives authority only to a Brahmin to GIVE OR ACCEPT any donations or Dhana as in this process the Brahmin acquires the bad karma of the DONOR and thus the acquired bad karma is burnt by the Gayatri mantra. Any Brahmin who takes dhana with out doing the additional Gayatri mantras of atleast 1008 mantras acquires the bad karma and he would exhaust this karma in this or future births. For the other varnas have the right only to give dhana. · Sandya vandanam contains few of the most important mantras from the Vedas and consists of : Achamanam, ganapathydianam, pranayamam, sankalpam, marjanam, prachanam, punar marjanam,Argya pradanam, pryachittargyam, iykyanu santanam, deva tharpanam,(as puva baga) followed by JAPA SANKALPAM,pranayama, prana nyasa, ten times pranayamam,GAYATRI AVAHANAM IN ONE"S HEART,gayathri nyasam,Gayathri Japam ( 108 in morning--32 in noon--64 in the evening-- mininimum prescribed),gayathri upasthanam, surya upasthanam, samastya abhivadanam ,dig devata vandanam, yama vandanam, harihara vandanam, surya narayana vandanam, samarpanam, concluded by RAKSHA. The mantras vary for each of the VEDA and Sutra to which a Brahmin belongs and depending upon the time the sandya vandanam is done some of the mantras vary. A person who is doing the sandya vandanam is a dwijan (twice born) as through this second birth, he has the opportunity to realise the SELF through this karma. Apart from Brahmins the shatriyas and vyshyas are also entitled to this mantra but these varnas cannot accept dhana or the charities. · Sandya vandanam has to be done just before sun rises in the morning,in the after noon at 12 noon when the sun is at the top of the sky and in the evening just before sun set. Coming to the specific query of the devotee which dwells on a particular procedure which is the argya pradanam --- has to be done 3 times reciting the gayatri mantra in the morning and evening and twice in the noon -- if one does the karma as per the prescribed time as per earlier para -- if there is a delay in the prescribed time one more argyam has to be given that is the 4th. The philosophy behind the argya pradanam -- there is a symbolic story in the Vedas which goes as.. The asuras fight against the SUN GOD daily and the argya given reciting the Gayatri mantra is like the legendary weapon Vajrayuda and defeats the asuras fighting against the sun daily-- while this is the literal meaning -- the spiritual meaning the masters say--the asura represents the false knowledge (AGYANA) arising out of maya --- due to the AGYANA the false knowledge of the mind, the thoughts constantly occurring in the mind recognises you only as the body with flesh, bones and the blood and masks your real SELF. This is also the root cause of all problems in this earthly dimension (plurality) and due to which there is a continuous birth and death -- it is the mind and its misleading recognition with the body makes it to die and be reborn again. The SUN represents the Gyana or the knowledge. This constant war of the mind is won through this Gayathri mantra, and results in the realisation of the SELF OR THE ATMA GYANA takes place. The next question of the devotee was on gayatri tharpanam. While I am not too sure of the answer, it is most likely that for any MANTRA PURASCHARANAM -- 10 % of the number of mantra japas done should be given as homa, 10% of the Homa done should be done as Tharpanam and 10% of the number of tharpanam should be given as brahmana Bhojanam be given . (Food offering). This is to get the mantra siddhi. I think this procedure, which is applicable to any mantra, applies for GAYATRI ALSO.
