Guest guest
Sub : Mumba Devi and Mahalakshmi Temples at Mumbai I had posted in my last mail about Mumba devi and drawn an analogy to Srichakra the different markets around her . Mumba devi is 'Chandi Devi ' and her three forms MahaKali -- Mahalaksmi -- Mahasaraswathi has been installed in Mahalaksmi temple. The place is also called Mahalakshmi like the Kali ghat in Calcutta. Here is a series of events as to how the temple came into picture -- as reported in the well known Tamil spiritual daily Gyana Bhumi before 4 years. Mr X as I do not remember the name of the wealthy Maharashtrian Contractor who was assigned a job (in late 1800 ) of building a wall ( cornice ) to fence the sea near Mahalakshmi , by the British raj. He promptly started building the wall and everything was going smoothly as per the plan until a stretch of wall of about five meters was falling after competing it. When this happened for 4 times in a row ,he got panicky as the deadline was nearing and employed the best of the brains available at that time to evaluate the soil conditions, only to learn that the soil is no different than that nearby where he had already finished the job. Encouraged by this report he personally supervised building that particular stretch by using additional concrete than required and was a satisfied man after finishing the job. But the satisfaction lasted temporarily, as he found to his horror on the next day that the entire wall had collapsed. Agonised and dejected, he couldn't think of any alternatives and spent the morning there itself. In the mid afternoon sitting near the collapsed wall ,he fell asleep and had the vision of Devi asking him how he has ventured to build a wall over her. She also revealed that she is in that part of the sea shore and asked him to make arrangements to lift her out. The contractor immediately woke up and couldn't believe what happened but thought he could give it a try. The next day he had arranged for a gang of fishermen to net her out. The work started from the morning digging the murky soil of the sea and removing the mud and searching for any abnormal items which continued till evening, when suddenly the fishermen felt that they could not lift the net . After huge efforts they lifted the soil with the net and on a frantic search of that particular sample revealed three colourful stones of a medium sizes and this was given to the contractor. He immediately approached the learned pandits and it was confirmed by the learned that they were a very rare salagram of Devi. That night Devi appeared in the contractor's dream again asking him to compete the wall , further build a temple and install her there ,naming it as mahalaksmi temple. Pleased by this, he successfully built the wall and dedicates the entire profit to acquire a piece of land very near the sea. After this incident he finds that he wins the bigger tenders from British raj, which normally is not given to Indians because of the imperialistic rule at that time. He dedicates most of the profit to the temple. Well devotees that is the history of Mahalaksmi temple and the three deities installed there are so beautiful in pure gold.( the three salagrams of devi have been covered with faces of Mahakali -- Mahalaksmi - Mahasaraswathi.) I would urge every devotee of this group to take time if they are visiting Mumbai or in transit , to visit both these temples and recite either Devi Saptha sathi or atleast Lalitha Sahasranama. if possible have a mission in their life time to visit all or most of the Shakti Peet in India from Sheer Bhawani -- Vaisnavi devi in Jammu Kashmir to Kanyakumari in the deep south -- Ambaji in the West --to Dakshina kali in the east. These devies protect India and her great spiritual wealth eternally. Jai Mahakali -- Mahalakshmi - Mahasaraswathi Ganapthy ---- Vijayalakshmi R.Ganapathy -- vijaya ganapathy Muscat -- Oman Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop!
