Guest guest
Sri Rama Jayam Namaskarams to all, I have heard a lot about Mahaan Sri Bhaskararayar, but do not know anything about his life and preachings. I have also heard about a place called Bhaskararajapuram near Thanjavur where he lived and the Ambaal that he was worshipping is kept here and also supposedly this place is like Kashi for Sri Vidya Upasakas. Can somebody please provide details about this Great person and also this place Bhaskararajapuram, as to where is it located and how can we reach it? Thank you With regards Sudarshan Iyer Catch all the cricket action. Download Score tracker
Guest guest
Dear All Very interesting info on Bhaskararaya. There is a strong probability that he was born off Bijapur to Gambiraraya, a scholar himself, belonging Marathi Deshashth Brahmin group. I have seen this info in an introduction in Sanskrit to Shakambari Sahasranama published around 15-20 years back. Interestingly the original, Shakambari/banashankari temple is in Badami (vatapi) which is again in Bijapur district.(Till 1950s or so this region was in Bombay presidency). The deity is sacred and common to various sects of Marathi speaking people whether dvaita/advaita.There is beautiful temple in Chalukyan style even now, with a beautiful idol of Devi. It should be noted that Sangli mentioned in an earlier posting as the place of birth of Bhaskararaya is not far from Badami.(also the place where Lord parasurama incarnated. Also ruled by Chalukyans) There are other supporting facts that he hailed from this region. 1. Acc to tradition, Chandralamba was his family deity. The temple again is North Karnataka. It is said that the temple itself has been constructed like Srichakra meru- I am yet to see it.He wrote a work called Chandralamba Mahatmya tika. 2.In 16th, 17th, 18th centuries many Marathi Brahmin families from this region belonging to advaita/dvaita migrated to tanjore district, mannargudi, thirukattupalli etc (due to invitation from the local kings who were descendents of Shivaji younger brother and also due to disturbed political conditions in this region during Aurangazeb's period specifically). 3. Distinctions of advaita/dvaita do not apply in marital relations among Deshasth brahmins in Southern maharashtra/Bijapur etc -even among people who migrated to Tamilnadu to this day. His marrying a sister (daughter acc to some) of Madhva yati is not surprising. 4. Links with Gujarat was also strong in this period. Descendents of Chalukyan kings ruled parts of Gujarat acc to some historians. Suresh Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop! http://platinum.
