Guest guest
Dear Srimaan Ravi, Namaskar. I thank you for the additional information on PBR. You have spoken my mind clearly by saying -- legends and miracles do not matter as the works itself speaks for itself. that is the reason I thought of separating credible FACTS ( works ) from the incredible instances (though it could be true) and deemed it fit to split the post into two parts. I think one of the reason for the lack of precise history for the great personalities in the Indian Culture could be, due to -- the prophets being born again and again at least every decade anywhere in India and what they do is a repetition of the earlier one to uphold the doctrines of Sanatana Dharma as per the Vedas and Sastras. So what becomes important is the Truth of vedas and sastras than the personality itself. I would like to quote Maha Perival in this regard -- Who used to say -- what I said is what Adi Sankara said and What Adi sankara said was what Vedas and sastras say. In view of these two mails this becomes the cocluding part on the subject. ganapathy = = = Vijaya Ravi <miinalochanii wrote:namaste Sri ganapathyji Thanks for your detailed post. There is a work called bhaskaravilasa in sa.nskR^ita with a detailed sketch of shrii bhaaskara-raaya's life. I have not read this, even thouh I have the text in original sanskrit. In the book "Auspicious Wisdom" Dr. Brooks notes that it is an exaggerated account of PBR's life. It should be also noted that a lot of legends about PBR, which cannot be authenticated, are added to this great teacher's life, such as the story of muslim woman you mention. It is better not accept anything legendary, and just go by his works alone. The legends may be OK, as long as they are uplifting (for example, the story about commentary on mahaa chatushhshhashhTi koTi yoginI gaNa sevitA), otherwise we have to be cautious. This lack of accurate biography is very surprising (that too at a time as late as 17th/18th century) and is almost like shrii shankara's case. At least it is justified for shankara as his date itself is not clear and very old (ranging from 5 century BC to 8th century AD). On the contrary, life of shrii ramaanuja (10 century AD) is much clear and well recorded. Hence, I find it is difficult to understand this obscurity about the life of this mahaan, who is praised as THE authority of mantra shaastra. Thanks again for all your wonderful contributions.
