Guest guest
Sub : significance of the Red colour in Kungumam or Kumkum A few days back, I had posted my personal thoughts on the significance of Vibhuti ( holy ash ) which prompted me to post some of my opinion on the significance of the Kumkum which is used widely for worshipping Devi. This mail is a purely a personal idea or thought. What is Kumkum . Kumkum is made from fresh turmeric soaked with lemon juice for few days and when the colour of the turmeric just turns BRIGHT RED it is dried and powdered. There are some rules like the turmeric should be soaked in the Shukla Paksha and grounded on pournima. If the turmeric is soaked for longer period it would turn reddish black -- so care should be taken to remove the turmeric for drying at the right time. Our masters have decreed the wearing of Kumkum -- the Red Dye - as a symbol for a married female and one of the lakshana for the female and the holy ashes as a lakshana for a male. When you burn the kumkum it would turn black and finally turn into white ashes -- white light also encompasses red colour light -- this is a Siva- Shakthi Iyykyam. ( srichakram sivayor vapuh ). Speaking on this Namavali -- Maha Perivaal said Sri Vidya is the vital link to convert the dwaitha to advaitha. The Siva who doesn't even know the existence of the second and the Shakti responsible for the pluralities are finally perceived as one in this LS namavali.. Ambaal who causes the multiple would also grace the the spiritual aspirant the discrimination between the eternal and the ephemeral , dispassion, discipline and intense desire for liberation -- to only reveal the secret of ONE . The red kumkum has other significances also. When we perceive Lalitha Maha tripura Sundari's characteristics SHE IS ALL RED. Her colour of the body is red like the light of 1000 rising suns ( udyat bhanu saharabha ). In the Dhyana Shlolkam there are several references to the colour RED : Sindurarana Vighrahaham : She is reddish like the sindoor ( a type of kumkum popular in north and is a sowbhagya Dravyam ) . This word Sinduraruna can be split into two words as Sindur + Aruna meaning She is Red of Red. Raktha Charanaam : Her lotus feet is reddish in colour. Sakumkuma Vilepanam She wears the reddish paste of the saffron. Aruna malya bhushambram : She wears a red garland and red ornaments. Arunaam KarunnaTharangadakshi in this verse She is described as Red in colour. Japakusumabhasuram She is shining or is splendid like the japa kusumam. ( glittering china rose ) The references to red colour partly are also in verses: Manikya mouli,Rathna Chashakam,Rakthothpalam and Rathna Ghatam -- the navaratna includes precious gems of red colour also. She also has a red color flower which is either a lotus or in tamil it is called Sevvalli. Her crown also includes red stones. She wears a red silk garment dyed with kowsumbha juice -- a red pigment Red is the colour of desire, beauty, love -- desire denotes the desire for liberation, love is the love for the real self and that is the truth is beauty and truth, beauty. Red is the colour of dawn, the dispeller of darkness and harbinger of light. Red is also the colour of blood -- the life giving energy for the humans through blood the body absorbs oxygen and food , the energy thus gained is used in the worldly activities. So in short blood is Shakthi and without blood we would be inert and lifeless -- That is a pretha -- She sits on the Pancha pretha as a life giver Pure Consciousness. She is the Life of life -- The transcendent existence consciousness and bliss. The kumkuma is worn just above and inbetween the eye brows where you have the agnya chakra of the internal srichakra - when the kundalini raises to this agnyachakra the sadhak goes into savikalpa samadhi - the first stage where he gets the total knowledge of devi. Agnya also means instructions -- so it is also the guru's place , who instructs the sadhak for the realisation. in srividya guru = Ambaal. Therefore it is appropriate to wear the kumkum on the agnya chakra symbolically. Kumkum is worn as a round dot representing the Bindu of SriChakra. Bindu is the place of Srimatha the supreme that is transcendental absolute, immutable, ineffable as effulgence Prakasha known as SRI LALITHA.always united with SIVA.
