i have heard of 'saptamatrikas' which means seven mothers. has anyone

heard of saptamarkas? sapta means seven. What does 'markas' mean? i

know margas mean 'paths' ... can anyone clear this up, please?

Sub: Durga – Ashtami – Saptamatrakas.

This mail should not be construed as a reply but came to my thoughts to post

some more information on saptamatrikas and therefore the subject matter.

Why Ashtami is important for Ambaal worship.

Ashtami is the eighth day from Amavavsya or from the Pournamasi which is

respectively known as Krishnashtami and shukla ashtami.

She, who is worshipped by the eight divine powers, Durga while fighting the

demon raktha beeja, saw the numerous demons similar to him produced from the

blood spill decided to manifest out of Herself seven emanations called

sapthamatrikas. They are :

Brahmi ,the energy of Brahma – Vaishnavi the energy of Vishnu – Maheswari the

energy of Iswara – Kaumari – the enegy of Kumara,-- Varahi the energy of

Varaha—Aindri the energy of Indra—Narasimhi the energy of Narashimha-- are the

Sapthamatikas together with DURGA constitute the eight powers and the

personification of the power of GODS.

All these shakthies have the same forms, weapons and vehicles as their lords.

Thus Durga is also named Ashtami and the Ashtami of the two Navarathries are

known as MAHASHTAMI. She, who combines in her all the important powers to

vanquish evil and restore peace,.

Durga is also called Astami because She permeates the eight important organs of

the human body consisting of five sense organs, mind, intellect and ego. When

all these eight organs functions in balance of the Cosmic law with the grace of

Devi the final liberation the MOKSHA is possible.

In the Tantras , Ashtami marks the point where power of the awakened Kundalini

turns to be BLISSFUL.

The Tantras explains the cosmic purposes of the eight deities as – Brahmi for

the primodial nada , the energy before the first throb of creation, vaishnavi

giving the structure , order and shape to the creation – maheswari for the

energy of created things – kaumari who gives the guidance energy in the cave of

the heart for realization – Varaahi , the energy and power of assimilation and

enjoyment --- aindri the terrible power that destroys all who oppose the cosmic

laws—narasimhi also known as chamunda the energy for the spiritual awkening in

the heart – AND DURGA THE TOTALITY OF THESE POWERS.

The Durga Saptha Sathi in the twelfth chapter pala sthuthi says … ashtamyan cha

chaturdasyam navamyanchayka chethsaa..

In the above verse the importance of praying devi is highlighted on the ashtami

day.

If a devotee can also regularly fast and worship on these days, the Divine Mum ,

perceiving the Durga Consciousness is a FOREGONE CONCLUSION.

JAI ASHTAMI

Ganapathy = = = Vijaya

Ganapathy --- Vijaya

" Jai Bhavani " - - - - " Jai Sri Lalitha Maha Maha Tripura Sundari "

" Sarvam Shakti Mayam Jagath "
