This is a subject matter of yoga suutra-s of patanjali. See the above link

and refer to suutra-s 3.1 and 3.2. I have the book by Hariharananda Aranya

(H in below quote), which is considered as one of the best books on this

subject.

similar mental modifications on the same object is confined to the desired

place. But the thought-process on the same object is intermittent and in

calmness of the mind and can be applied to any object of meditation. If flow

IMO, you should first consider just one book (such as by H) and follow some

of the critical concepts (such as samyama) and then see how others explain

it.
