Guest guest
REspected shrih Ramanan, I cannot readily recall the 'guru mahima' stotram but i am familiar with many wonderful stotrams on the Mahima (glory) of the guru. My favorite ones are the Dakshinamurthy storam and Guruvashtakam by adi shankarcharchya. in the dakshinamurthy stotra, Adi shankara sings the praise of the mauna guru shri Dakshinamurthy , an incarnation of lord Shiva. sHRI dakshinamurthy sat under a tree with a handul of disciples and under his 'silent' prersence the disciples attained god realization - the point being made is Lord dakshinamurthy's very presence was the 'shaktipat' for his disciples... When you are sitting with 'truth' , that is the best sat-sangati! Shri Sureshvaracharya in his Vartikam (commentary) entitled 'Manasollasa' on the Dakshinamurthy stotra of Adi Shankara proclaims the oneness of the supreme and the Guru thus Ishwaro Gururaatmeti Murti Bheda Vibhagine | Vyomavat Vyaaptarupaaya Dakshinaamurtaye Namaha || There is no distinction between Ishwara, the Atman and the Teacher. He (the Guru) is like space, all pervading as the form of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, the Guru of gurus. IN FACT, SHRI lalita sahasaranama describes sree lalita as the embodiment of lord dakshinamurthy in one of the names! also, shri adi shankara praises the guru thus in his guruvashtakam... shadangAdi vedo mukhe shAstra vidya, kavitvAdi gadyam supadyam karo ti manaschennalagnam gurOrangripadme tataHkim tataHkim tataHkim tataH kim? The Vedas with their six auxiliaries and knowledge of sciences may be on the one's lips; one may have the gift of poesy; and may compose good prose and poetry;but if one's mind be not attached to the lotus feet of the Guru what thence, what thence, what thence, what thence? to read the entire eight verses, visit... http://www.kamakoti.org/shlokas/kshlok6.htm Music composer shri muthuswamy dikshitir has also sung the greatness of the guru in his guruguha kritis. sri dikshitir says one of the qualities of an ideal guru is... niramshAyamakapradAtre - The complete one that bestows jnana AND then we have Totakacharya , a disciple of shri shankaracharya , who has composed Totakashtakam on his guru adi shankara... Totakacharya sys... guru pungava pungava kEtanatE samatAmayatAm nahi kOpi sudhIhi | saraNAgatavatsala tattvanidhE bhavasankara dEsikamE saraNam || Oh, Best of Teachers ! Supreme Lord Who has the sacred bull as His banner ! None of the wise Ones is equal to Thee! Thou are compassionate to those who take refuge in Thee! Thou treasure chest of Truth! Be Thou my refuge, Oh, Master Sankara! Last but not least, how can we ever forget sri vidya guru Bhaskaraya who used to give 'nayana' diksha by gazing into the eyes of the disciple... There are many attributes of an ideal guru and there are many characteristics of an ideal disciple. as per shri krishna in the the srimad bhagvat gita , the ideal disciple is one who renders service to the lotus feet of the guru and inquires submissively ( in the 'vinaya bhava) and asks questions without challenging the authority of the guru!
