Sub : Sri Appayya Dikshit the Great Advaitin as Adi Shankara

As per the Biography of this mahaan – He is born in one of the years 1553 or

1558 or 1520 or 1587 as given by various authors. The lack of accuracy of Indian

history, is due to our great culture that says that the manifestations on

earth are impermanent and the universal spirit which the manifestations spoke of

has been given more importance and meticulously recorded. One never reads the

name of the sculptor in any of our ancient temples.

Appayya is a Pet name and his real name was sri sri Vinayaka Subramaniyam

lived upto 72 years and left his mortal coils before Lord Nataraja at

Chidambaram.

He was a great Shiva Upasaka and lived at a time when Vaishnavism supported by

the kings claimed superiority of saivism and through his works proved that

Vihnu and Shiva are one.

Sri Appayya was brilliant as a boy, learning was prodigious and mastered at an

infant age the intricacies of Vedas, vedantas, sastras like Adi Shankara and

considered by many as second avathar of adi sankara.

He was one of the great Advaitin and saw Eswara, Mahavishnu and Devi As ONE. His

writings also included other philosophies on Vishitadvaita and dvaitha. By

conviction he was an advaitin and accepted with his intellect, whereas true

worship of lord shiva was the religion of his heart. He had not the slightest

tinge of hatred for Vishnu and saw no difference between the two. His mission in

life was one of reconciliation of warring groups, so as to promulgate tolerance

and goodwill amongst all.

Such was his Bhakthi that in order to test its depth he once drank the

poisionous juice of dattura and asked his disciple to write down in that state

of intoxication whatever came from his mind which is a lucid stotra “ Atmarpana

Stuti”.

He was a sidda and yogi and used to attacks of colic pain as a result of

prarabdha. When this attack used to come during the puja and mediation he simply

transferred the malady to the towel and the towel used to JUMP, astonishing the

disciples and after the puja he used to take it back to his body.

He was a grustha and a fine example to prove how the nithyakarma and worship

done with faith confers on the adherent ample peace, comfort , prosperity and

upliftment spiritually. He led a life of a karma, bhakthi and gnana yogi. He

performed a number of yagas and yagnas like vajpeya and was a nithya Agnihotri.

Sri appayya with a mind of fine penetration and profound spirituality could

write more than 104 standard works which were packed with serious subtle

thinking and as worthy as sankara. It will take several years of hard labour and

toil for one to read master these treatises.

Vedantic works : Siddanta Lesa Sangraha, Nyaya Rakshamani, Kalpatruparimala,

Madhva tantra mukha mardana and its commentary, Purvottara Mimamsavada nakshatra

mala etc He used to say and write that in order to make known in an elaborate

manner their inner meanings which is based on the authority of the sruti and the

puranas these works were done.

For the saiva cult no book has done more service than his book Siva tattva

vivka.. his work includes commentaries of the great epics Ramayana and maha

bharatha.

In his work Brahma tarkastava he repies to the arguments advanced by those

condening Lord Shiva and his worship and debates and proves technically from our

scriptures that he is Parabrahma.

Shivadhyana Paddhati deals with how to perform mental puja for Shiva and shiva

puja vidhi the technique of worship of shiva.

As it is not possible to discuss all his works sri appayya’s display HIS

KNOWLEDGE OF mimamsa, vyakarana, nyaya , rhetoric and in fact the whole field of

Sanskrit literature in “ Sivarka mani dipika “.

Broadly his 104 works can be grouped as 25 works on Vedanta,26 on sivadvaita

themes, 7 on mimamasa, 3 on alamkaras, 26 devotional works, 15 of misc nature

and one on kavya and vyakarana.

There are several legendary anecdotes in the life of ari appayya dikshita handed

down from one to another and attained different colours due to change of authors

which is not necessary for us to know these to conclude the greatness.
