The general convention is

a) Left lap is the seat of one's wife

b) Right lap is the seat of someone in daughter's position. It could be

daughter or daughter-in-law.

There is an incident in mahaabhaarata illustrating it*. This is a general

convention and has nothing to do with srividyopaasana.

Even in the context of srividya, there is a legend that when bhaaskaraaya

was challenged to tell the names of all 64 crore yogini names, he started

doing that behind a screen and ambaaL helped him (answering his prayer) in

the form of a small girl, sat on his right lap and told the names of the

yogini-s to him.
