You are correct as long as you are referring to informal worship, such as a mAnasa puuja or having conversation/prayer mentally with God. This can be done anywhere and at anytime, your space-time coordinates does not matter. However, formal puuja and rituals demand specific days and/or times. These requirements are specfic to each of them, and the relevant puraaNa-s and dharma shaastra-s explain that. One has to make distinction on that. Depending on special cases such as asaucha, some should not be done, even if the time and place is appropriate. This matters to even simple things like lighting a lamp in the altar.
