SRI MAHISHASURA MARDINI STOTRAM - VERSE 5

 

ayi raNa durmada shatru vadhodita durdhara nirjara shaktibhR^ite

catura vicAra dhurINa mahAshiva dUta kR^ita pramathAdhipate

durita durIha durAshaya durmada dAnava dUta kR^itAntamate

jaya jaya he mahiSAsura mardhini ramya kapardhini shailasute

 

SPIRITUAL COMMENTARY

 

Mother, those demons who sought to fight You saw You as a very beautiful woman

for them to do with as they pleased. Due to the raging desires clouding their

hearts, they were never able to perceive Your true nature, and despite Your

compassionate warnings, they came rushing to their doom like locusts flying

into a holy homa fire.

 

There are many in this world today who feel that the world exists to satisfy

their material desires, regardless of the consequences to Mother Nature or to

other beings. They never perceive Your divine form shining within this

Creation. Those who deviate from morality are taking You for their enemy, and

their errors must be corrected. You are the One who takes complete

responsibility for correcting all of Your children, and those who refuse to be

corrected are forcibly prevented by You from making any other mistakes and

falling further into a pit of self-created suffering.

 

Mother, Your true nature is like an infinite ocean of highest wisdom and Truth.

As we are but tiny droplets in small little waves emanating from that infinite

ocean, if we seek to cut ourselves off from Truth and holiness, we will be

separated from the very source of our own strength and vitality. So Mother,

please cast Your gracious glance on me at least once, and inspire my heart and

mind towards You always. Give me the hope to be righteous, stimulate my power

of discrimination, and if I become confused, please prevent me from violating

Your sacred laws.

 

Om durjanaH sajjano bhUyAt - May a difficult birth become a good birth.

sajjanaH shAntim ApnuyAt - May a good birth become a divinely peaceful birth.

shAnto mucyeta bandhebhyo - May a peaceful birth lead to liberation.

muktAsh cAnyAn vimocayet - May the enlightened ones lead others to liberation.
