SRI MAHISHASURA MARDINI - VERSE 6

 

ayi sharaNAgata vairi vadhUvara vIra varAbhaya dAyakare

trihuvana mastaka shUla virodhi shirodhi kR^itAmala shUlakare

dumi dumi tAmara dundubhi nAda maho mukharI kR^ita tigmakare

jaya jaya he mahiSAsura mardhini ramya kapardhini shailasute

 

SPIRITUAL COMMENTARY

 

Mother, when the wives of those demon kings took refuge in Your lotus feet, You

blessed them with Your divine protection. Though their husbands saw You as

their enemy, those women saw the truth of Your divinity and they surrendered to

You completely, praying to You wholeheartedly. Your exquisitely sharp trident

never fails to discriminate between sincerity and deception, and with Your

third eye You look into the inner hearts of all creatures. Mother, I also must

develop my power of discrimination, so that I will never mistake the false

pleasures of this world with the eternal bliss of union with my Supreme Self.

 

I long to take refuge in You as the demon kings' wives did, but I cannot do

this until I have conquered my mind, with all of its pride and personal likes

and dislikes. You are the divine Oneness underlying this universe of

multiplicity; there is no duality in Your nature at all. Until I have gone

beyond all the pairs, like happiness and sorrow, or praise and criticism, I

will not be able to approach You. Mother, please bless me to become detached

from this limited material world; purify my vision and my heart so that I will

always be able to see Your divine Unity shining everywhere, for this is how all

the ancient sages have seen You. Oh mother, You are the only one who can save

me from all my enemies, both within and without. I wish to surrender my whole

being at Your radiant lotus feet and be always under Your divine protection!
