SRI MAHISHASURA MARDINI STOTRAM - VERSE 7

 

ayi nija hu.nkR^iti mAtra nirAkR^ita dhUmravilocana dhUmrashate

samara vishoSita shoNita bIja samudbhava shoNita bIjalate

shiva shiva shumbha nishumbha mahAhava tapita bhUta pishAcarate

jaya jaya he mahiSAsura mardhini ramya kapardhini shailasute

 

SPIRITUAL COMMENTARY

 

Oh Mother! The invincible sound of "huM" emanating from Your infinite energy

turned the powerful demon Dhumralochana into a pile of mere ash, and in Your

fierce form as Bhadrakali You consumed the demon Raktabija without allowing a

trace of his negativity to remain. Raktabija foolishly thought that he was

undefeatable, as he had won the boon that every drop of his blood that hit the

ground would generate many more demons. But whatever physical, mental or

mystical powers one might have, there is no force in the universe that can

stand against the laws of Dharma.

 

When You place Your divine lotus feet in Your devotee's heart, their brilliance

leaves no room for any darkness at all, and all the rajasic and tamasic

qualities, like anger, pride, hatred, laziness, and lust, are burned into ashes

by the subtle fire radiating from Your sacred feet. The mind that is consumed

with thoughts of Your radiant inner beauty will never be tormented by the

millions of thoughts that plague worldly people. You elevate the noble

qualities of compassion, purity and truthfulness in Your children, such that

all the demonic fores residing in the human heart are forced to flee from the

brilliance of Your divine light. Mother, during my meditations I am often

plagued by endless streams of meaningless thoughts and wishes. May the energy

generated by the recitation of Your holy mantras become a roaring fire that

completely incinerates all my negativity and all my thoughts, both positive and

negative.
