In the book "Vedas" published by Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan (and I think in

Hindu Dharma also, I am not sure), kAnchi paramAcharya discusses this matter

in detail.

Dear Sir

Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati of Kanchimutt has addressed this issue in

his book called Hindu Dharma which is extracted from Deivathin kural. There

is a separate chapter dedicated to this issue of difference in pronunciation

of vedic terms in various regions of India. I dont recollect the name of the

chapter. sorry.

Pranams,

I am sure the pandits at the moksha Puri Jagannath temple must be equally

reciting the mantras in their "own" correct way like their South Indian

counterpart from time immemorial.

why I am saying is, when I read this mail I was reminded of the experience of

HH Shree Ramanujam who practiced and totally surrendered to Sriman Narayana (

Saranagathi ) , while succeeded in changing the puja procedures at Tirupathi

Balaji temple, could not do the SAME at Puri . When he attempted to do it , on

the appointed day he was forced out of puri by Sriman Narayana and found him

lying in the early morning, 100 miles from puri. The puja pathadati was never

changed.

I was recently in Puri and had the opportunity to interact with some

learned scholars regarding some mantras.

True. They chant AIM as AING, HREEM as HREENG, KLEEM as KLEENG..etc.

Infact, a senior priest who accompanied me to Sri Jagannatha temple

chanted "OM NAMO BHAGAWATHE BASUDEVAAYO". For a moment, I stood

shocked and almost forgot the correct version. :-) When I chanted "Om

Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaaya", as how I have been taught in our South

Indian style, he objected to it and said it is the other way around,

though I could not chant in his style.

As long as one gets to be initiated or taught the mantra, we need to

apply the correct pronounciation, WITH the guidance of a Guru. Any

alterations or wrong prounciation of any mantra especially bija

mantras can bring disaster.

Sincerely

R. Kasthuri Rangan

Dear devotees,

In tamil too, there seem to be some difference in the

pronounciation of some bheeja manthras.

In some writings of Siddhas, 'aIm', is referred as

'aiyum', klEm is referred to as'kiliyum'. Kandashashti

kavacham also has these bheejas pronounced this way.

Pronouncing it as one's Guru initiates us into these

manthras ( and staying by it even if we know other

schools of thot/ geography pronounce it differently,

and knowing that this Bheeja is She Herself seems to

be critical.)

Have a query: In case a student after his study /

sadhana / coming into contact with other enlightened

people, changes a particular pronounciation of a

manthra or say bheeja manthra, do the shastraas

approve of this?

Do shasthras allow a student to refer back to Guru

about the change?

Will this tentamount to Guru nindhana?

Request the learned members to please advise the

group. My apologies,if i have erred in raising this

query.

Bala sharanam.

Gopi.

HARI OM

Please refer to HINDU DHARMA - Part Six : SIKSA -Chapter 11 Vedic Vocalisation

and Regional Languages pages 301 to 308 for details of regional variations in

pronounciation.HIS HOLINESS has concluded that Northern inotation have the

sanction of the Siksa sastra.

A close examination of the inotation of the people from the south , Malayalees.

Tamalians, Andhras (again norh and south) the kannadigas will reveal the marked

differences in inotaion and all have been accepted as normal variation due to

influence / corruption of locals over the generations.

Pranams to all

Yours,

G.Tulasi das.
