Prof V.Krishnamurthyji wrote in last mail DPDS -- 57 that :

" Goddess Mahalakshmi permanently resides in five places. A

lotus, the frontal head portion of an elephant, the hind

part of a cow, the spine on the back of a bilwa leaf, and

the sImanta of a sumangali."

I would like to add some more information on what I have heard from a discourse

of a well read Mahaan on this topic.

In all these places like the sImanta of a sumangali , mastak of an elephant ,

the back portion of cow etc , one need not do Avahanam of Mahalaksmi and the

devotee can directly do the Sahasranama Archana or an ashtotra of Mahalaksmi.

The Bilwa leaf when placed over the Shiva lingam must always be placed or fall

in such a way that the back of the leaf touches the lingam , while doing the

Rudra Trishati or other archana to Lord shiva.

The place where Mahalakshmi resides in a Lotus flower, is in its central part

and therefore one should not separate the petals of the Lotus flower and if at

all this lotus is to be used for any archanas, it should be taken as a full

flower and not in parts. ( Sastras allow the separation of petals for its use in

puja if it is not joined )

What I have noticed specially in Kerala (may be in other places also) , while

performing the " Bhagawathi Seva " -- Where Lotus flowers are extensively if not

exclusively used , invariably the "central part" ( carpel ) is discarded and

only the petals are left to be used.

Can Any of our learned members comment on the sastras Vs Practices.
