The confusion regarding Buddha being one of the Avataras of Narayana is often debated. But it may be observed that traditionally Adi Shankara is said to have declared Buddha as one of the Avataras of Vishnu and arranged for Vedic Pooja in Bodh Gaya. Also, a dashavatara Stotra attributed to Adi Shankara praises Buddha as the ninth Avatara o Vishnu. Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati, the illustrious Acharya who held the high seat of Shankaracharya Swamin of Sringeri also goes by this view in one of his Stotra in praise of Lord Narayana. I see nothing wrong in comparison of Matangi with Buddha. I have not read Mundamala Tantra, so no comments. Another Stotra called Dasha Mahavidya stotra, also claimed to be a part of Mundamala Tantra, also seems very inconsistent. As for Srividya, the association of Sri Rajarajeshwari is chiefly done with three Avataras of Bhagavan - Rama, Krishna and Nrisimha. Rama and Krishna have Rama sundari and Gopala Sundari Mantras, which are quite well-known. Also, A Bhashya on Nrisimha Tapini (attributed to Vidyaranya) tries to establish unity with Srividya, Gayatri and Nrisimha Anushtup Mantras. If one refers the Matangi Khanda of Rudrayamala, the relation between Matangi and Buddha is explained there. It says the two are same and both are personifications of 'Karuna' or compassion. It even lists Buddha mantra along with Matangi's. Also, Matangi Sahasranama, said to be from Jayadrathayamala, quoted in Katyayani Kalpa, has several names mentioning her association with Buddha. Again, it is up to the reader to accept it's validity or not! Questions have been raised often as to the correctness of attributing the authorship of Srividyarnava to Sri Vidyaranya. But I personally believe in it becuase I had read a certain Srimukham by Sri Abhinava Vidya Tirtha Bhagavan, who mentions clearly that Srividyarnava and Srividya Bhashyas are indeed works of Vidyaranya. Sri Karapatri Swamiji, a person whose great memories still remain in the hearts of the pious, also accepts Srividyarnava as the most authentic manual on Srividya, mainly becuase it is a work of Vidyaranya. The meditation of Dasha Mahavidyas, as detailed in Rudrayamala, is as follows: This is also what is taught traditionally by Karapatri Swamiji. Though it is meant to be imparted by a Guru to a Shishya, I suppose it is okay to share it here: Adhara - Bhairavi Swadhishthana - This chakra houses no deity and no meditation is prescribed here. The work explains at lenght as to why no meditation should occur here. Anyways, this is a Tamisra Chakra and hence to be ommitted. Certain Sampradayas, like those of Vimalanandanatha etc., meditate on Gayatri here. Manipura - Tara Nabhi chakra - Dhumavati Anahata - The right of this chakra is said to house Kamalatmika, Left Kali and Centre Bhuvaneshwari. Vishuddhi - Matangi Lambika - Bagalamukhi Ajna - Chinnamasta Sahasrara - Shodashi. Probably, this version of Mahavidyashas been popular with Srividya Upasakas because it places Lalita in the Sahasrara. But most of these placements seem more logical than many other versions. In that case, where is the Manipura chakra located and where is the Nabhi chakra located ? Regards, Shrinivas
