Pranams.

There are two views about conducting the “ LS HOMAM “ . While First school

thinks that LS homam should not be conducted in isolation but as an Anga of Sri

Vidya Navavara Puja , the other school feels otherwise -- it is not like that

and could be conducted provided one does Paryana atleast 10 times ( dashamsam )

.. I have been directed by my Pujya Guru to follow the second school of thought .

I seek comments on these views from the learned members.

Out of academic interest this question is placed and not to know why my guru has

advised in a particular way.

Namaste,

The post in question has presented a very fundamental

issue on homas.

Agni Mukha prayogas in the vedas are classified into

two folds:

a. Samantraka Homa - A homa where there is a vedic

mantra or a moola mantra;

b. Namamantra homa- There is no moola mantra involved

in this homa.

In a samantraka homa the offerings have to be by

avadhana karma (If not keval ajya or only ghee)i.e.,

ajya is first filled in the sruk then charu is placed

in the sruk abhigara is done to the charu in the charu

patra and again to the charu in the sruk before

offering the oblation.

This method has to be followed for all homas which

have a moola mantra in it. However, in case of

namamantra homa, there is no avadhana karma involved.

Therefore LS Homam can be performed with out Avadhana

Dharma.

LS Homa can be performed in isolation and not

necessarily as part of Navavarna Homam. It is

imperative that those who officiate should have

Srividya.

As Shri. Ganapathi Vijaya rightly pointed, it is

necessary to atleast a dashamsha japa for the homa.

I have seen in many LS Homams that it is combined with

mahaganapathi mantra and srividya. The tantrokta agni

mukha prayoga in fact goes further to include the

moola mantra in place of or in addition to the vedic

mantras.

I think it is pertinent that one follows the kramam

into which one has been initiated into. Bodhayana says

that what is incomplete, doubtful or otherwise

deficient becomes complete upon brahmana vachana to

that effect. If this is the case of brahmana vachana

then what is said by the guru is even more superior

and one ought to follow that person.

My 2 cents..
