Whereas in north india even ladies and kids (even before brahma upadesam) chant this mantra. can anyone tell why is this practive prevailant over our country. Mangala Pranams. While anybody can reply to this question based on their likes and dislikes, I think we have to understand the correct reply of what our Masters have said on this subject and would like to quote Mahaswamy in this regard from Deivathin Kural (Voice of Divinity ). Quote Mahaswamy : Vedas have given women only the right to do the Aupasana on her own and the right to learn the Vedas is not particularly given to Women and to All Castes. However woman can perform many puranic vrathas and pujas according to the sastras and she does not have to perform any Rite including Gayathry Mantra which forms part of Nithya Karma. The woman has a 50 % share of All benefits of Karmas performed by her husband and the husband does not get a fraction of benefit from the Karmas which the wife performs. This is due the domestic responsibility which the woman in society carries in managing a family and bringing up the children. Even if the woman learns Vedas overriding this rule and learns Vedas it would NOT yield any fruits for a such a rule is contrary to Dharmasastras. Periyavaal says that the woman should fight for the rights of theirs and impress upon their husbands the importance of performing Aupasana and on the days when their husbands can not perform Aupasana woman is entitled to do it. Woman should force their husbands to do the Gayathri Japa and Sandyavandana to retain their tenuous connection with the Vedic dharma as she is not entitled to mutter the Gayathri . She misses the benefits due to the negligence of their husband and is entitled to Coerce their spouse. And in this way they should protest for their Vedic rights instead of attempting do it by themselves. Unfortunately the reformists in North of India like Arya Samaj and other outfits in the name of reformation have granted the right of Gayathri and Vedic learning to everyone . The unfortunate development is equivalent to Brahmins having given up Vedic learning and other communities want to practice it. It is difficult to say which of the two is worst. As Gita -- says to take up the duty of another is a greater offence. Swamy says that an atheist is a better individual than these two categories. The Sastras proclaim that the sound of Vedas will bring good to the world and with the same tongue it imposes restrictions on certain people to learn. If one has full faith in Vedas he should follow it and practice it fully as prescribed. The Reformists question why Vedas cannot be made common to All. And My reply is Vedic Dharmas common to all Castes is not permitted by the Sages who created Sastras and assigned special duties to each caste and Sex. The sages knew beyond doubt the purpose and they were known for the spirit of sacrifice and impartiality and No vested interest other than the HAPPINESS of the MANKIND. Gayathri contains in itself the spirit and energy of all vedic mantras and imparts power like the engine to other mantras. Without Gayathri other mantras are futile. Gayathri Manthra and Argya are the most important rites of SandyaVandana and other parts are angas. (limbs ). Argya must be offered before Sunrise, at noon, at Sunset. ( Kanamal, Konamal and Kandu goes the rule in Tamil ) Only with INTENSE repetition of Gayathri one would be able to MASTER Vedic Mantras. Since Vedas need not be mastered by Women as a corollary they need NOT Recite the great Gayathri Manthra. ( by which they do not lose out the benefit as already said ) Thus Spake the Living GOD – MAHA PERIYAVAAL. Jai Gaythri Mathaji – Veda Mathaji.
