As far i recollect from deivathin kural only veda chanting is prohibited for

ladies. understanding veda sara and vedantha sara is not prohibited. Mandana

misra`s wife could be the judge due to her knowledge of vedanta.Her name

Sarasavani and she was Mahasaraswathy Herself.There are lot of other ladies

mentioned in puranas who had deep knowledge of vedanta sara. this does not mean

they were chanting vedas those days.Even today nothing prevents ladies from

learning veda sara or vedanta sara.
