Guest guest
I have been told by my grandfather on the day of brahmopadesam that for arghya you use "Vareniyam" - 24 metre - and for japa, You use "varenyam" (23 metre). This I have been following regularly in all our families. Yes, Afaik, Many in Chennai seems to be following such a pattern. Sad thing is that parents also do not know, and where they will teach their children. Gayatri Maataa is so good that whenever I recite her with correct pause for 5 times and correct length (no hurrying and no dragging either), It immediately calms my mind. After 20 minutes of japam, My whole thing is rejunevated. This is the immediate reward from her. I don't know anything else. But, I have also read books (Vaishnavite books on nitya-anusandanam) which say we should do japam only with 24 metre. It quotes some pramaanam also for that. I request scholars to enlighten me on this. Even purohits do not know the correct gayathri mantra today due its inherent conflicts in nichrud gayathri chandas and gayathri chandas (They are different as gayathri chandas means 24 aksharas while the classic gayathri mantra is 23 only)let alone some one from a text book. Even if one were to chant it from a book which shakha will the swara reflect as the swara differs for all the four veda shakhas. What about the sheeksha and pratishakya aspect of the mantra as regards logical pause, matra, varna jnana, udatta anudatta pratibheda etc etc etc...Which form of chandas is used in arghya and japa? These are pertinent questions which most brahmanas chanting the mantra daily are not aware of. How then can a uninitiated person know the nuances with out a guru? My 2 cents, GP

This I have been following regularly in all our families. One of the books I have discusses this aspect. I could not locate this book right now (hence,I am unable to give the reference). According this book -- vareNiyam (which make its true gAyAtri chhandas) is used while doing homa/yaj~nA with the mantra. For all other purposes, we use (including arghya) we use only 23 syllabled mantra (that uses vareNyam). There are also differences in svara-s depending on where it comes. In some places we use diirga svaritaa at the end of prachodayaat (like the gaayatrii-s in mAhAnArayaNa upanishad) and some places only "cho" goes anudAtta and the rest stays flat and simple. As GP pointed there a quite a few items that come into play (as it is indicated in the initial portion of siixavalli such as maatra, baalam, sama, santana etc). Fortunate are those who have guru to guide them to the right practice. My 2c. I am be wrong. Ravi

Guest guest
Vedamatre Namah After the recent posts relating to use of "varenyam" and "vareniyam", I am now confused on its correct usage in regular sandhyavandanam and independent chanting of Gayatri mantram. Everytime I chant, I tend to be cautious about its correct usage but am uncertain. Can the learned please guide? May Vedamatha Gayatri inspire and enlighten our intellect R.
