Dear Sri Kannan,

Gayatri is to be chanted after initiation (upanayanam)

at 3 sandhya times. Sandhyavandanam (mainly argya) to

be performed between 5.30 & 6.30 in the morning and

evening. And, for madhyanhikam, it is by 10.30 to 12

noon; everyday. Being employed, it is difficult to do

madhyanhikam at the fixed time. However, as this too

is not to be missed, it can be performed immediately

after morning sandhya.

Chanting of gayatri is to be done only during the

above 3 times. Not to be chanted while walking, in

the crowded place, or in the bed (night).

There is no manthra which guarantees reduction of

papas (bad deeds) done in the past births or the

current.

In fact, according Sage Yagnavalkya, if a person does

1100 gayathri everyday in the morning (after bath and

doing the poorvanga argya, etc of sandhya), he gets

all the papas removed, and he needs to do nothing

further in the day. Thus, the Sage reiterates the

importance of gayathri.

Gayathri is the springboard for any upasana. Any

manthra sweekaranam or upasana is delayed due to one's

papas. It is suggested to do tila homam (with sahasra

gayathri - without vyahriti) with swahaa at the end,

to remove these and obtain the desired results for a

few months - say on every sunday.

There was another mail from one of our beloved members

about following acharas in the current age.

No doubt, everyone has to adopt the acharas (good

practices) followed by their family first, to purify

oneself and obtain happiness and peace of mind. This

is the first step to worship devatas, pitrus. A few

small minimum examples:

1. Rise early (by atleast 5 am)

2. take head bath (head bath not compulsory for

ladies except Tue and Fri and pitru dinams.

3. wear clean/washed clothes everyday.

4. do sandhya vandanam

5. do a small pooja (ladies chant stotras or japas in

the pooja place with deepam lit).

6. cook the food after bath and offer to the god.

7. in the evening, assemble (with children) and offer

10 minutes prayers, stotras (any language), etc.

8. go to bed early and sleep well after 2 minutes

prayer.

9. Men (father deceased) to perform Amavasya

tharpanam without fail, wherever one lives.

10. Ladies to cooperate to perform annual shraddha to

the deceased parents without fail.

11. Ladies to keep away from pooja room and kitchen on

the 3 days; teach the children or spouse how to

prepare simple meal.

12. Try and avoid sipping, and always clean the

tumbler yourself after the use.

13. Follow custom re. pollution (theetu) - birth or

death for the required number of days. Consult

seniors, for doubts.

These are the simple acharaas which can and should be

followed, believing that our sages and ancestors

followed this and lived happily.

Thanks

L Vaidyanathan
