Guest guest
This is slightly off-topic, but I couldn't resist...can some one direct me to a audio casstte of yajurveda (smartha) sandhya vandanam? I have tried to get it...but so far, haven't succeded. Even a personal copy (doesn't need to be a professional cassette) would be a great help. Thanks to all, Sundar --- "R. Guest guest
Namaste, I endeavour to share my knowledge of gayathri mantra japa and the technical details in the same. Since the scope of the subject is extremely wide, I would deal with the same based on parts. 1. Understanding the Chhandas of Gayathri and the forms to be chanted by followers of different shakhas; 2. The correct form of mantra in Japa and Arghya; 3. Different form of Chhandas for brahmanas, kshatriyas and vaishyas, an undecided question?; 4. What constitutes Sandyavandana; 5. Sandyavandana and its performance while travelling, in impurity, in sickness etc.; 1. Understanding the Chhandas of Gayathri and the forms to be chanted by followers of different shakhas; Before going on to the meaning of Gayathri, we need to understand the peculiarities arising from its chhandas or the metre. There are many forms of chhandas like gayathri, trishtup, jagati, anushtup etc. Gayathri mantra is in the gayathri chhandas constituting 24 aksharas or syllables. However, the original gaythri mantra occuring in Rig Veda has only 23 aksharas, which is because of vareNyam and not vareNIyam. I am not going into the details of the lakshanas of laghu and guru swaras in chhandas, but it is sufficient to note that a poornakshara is taken as 1 syllabi while a sandhi akshara or ardhakshara is omitted in the count. As per Pingala Chhandas Sutra 3.59, any mantra where the original chhandas extends by a few aksharas or is short of a few aksharas is known as Bhurich and Nichrud respectively. The corresponding sutra is: Oonadhikena Nichrud - Bhoorijau The original gayathri in the Rig veda is hence in Nichrud Gayathri Chhandas as it has 23 aksharas and not Gayathri Chhandas. 2. The correct form of mantra in Japa and Arghya; Next, I would deal with what forms have to be chanted by dvijas from different shakhas. 1. Rig Veda - Ashvalayana and Shaunaka shakha, Sama Veda - Gautamaadi traya and Shukla Yajur Veda - Madhyandina shakha have to use Nichrud Gayathri as there is Chhando nirdeshana in these shakhas as per vedanga. It is to be noted that the arghya is given using Gayathri and japa is done using Nichrud Gayathri in sandyavandana in the above cases. 2. Taittareya Shakha and Atharva Veda - Narada and Angirasa shakha followers need to use gayathri as there is no rishi chhandas or devata nirdesha in this shakha. Some also allow Taittareya Shakha followers to opt between nichrud gayathri and gayathri, but I feel that the Gayathri appearing in Yajurveda being in Gayathri Chhandas, only Gayathri Chhandas should be followed by this recension. When is VareNyam and VareNIyam used by other shakhas.? The Gayathri Bhashya by Adi Shankara states that during Japa Kala it is Nichrud Gayathri and not Gayathri Chhandas. "Gayathri Mantrasya Japa Kaale Nichrudgayathryeva Chhandaha na tu kevala gayatri" It is also said that "Chaturvimshatyaksharaatmakatvakalpanam japadanytra homadaveva bhavathi japakaale tu yatha shrutam trayovimshatyaksharaatmakameva japitavyam" In homa and other karmas except gayathri japa one should use gayathri and not nichrud gayathri. In vyasa smriti it is said: "Vishwamitrarishischhando Nichrudgayatramuchyate devata paramatma vaa savita vaa prakeertitaha" One should follow the above rules based on one's shakha. I shall post more in my next mail on --- "R.
